We made a scratching post at home.
An old high stool with coir rope wrapped tightly around its legs. Works well, too.

Was gonna say the same yes, but the Capt. already beat me to it
![]() Sisal would work just fine as well; coir possibly more readily available there. Wrap it around any piece of wood or whatever. Lay on floor, attach to wall at cat-reachable height (possibly enticing them to stretch a little; don't cruelly put it out of their reach though. It's nice to have it start at ground level then go up until where they can just reach with some effort), etc. Make sure there are no nails or splinters or anything for the cat to hang onto, of course. (The Mrs. just chimes in to tell me friends of hers have one going from floor to ceiling, for their young cat to climb all the way in. It can reach the top of a cupboard up there.) (She also tells me now, and from a kitty toys book, many cats seem to enjoy if you put it not straight up, but at an angle of 45 degrees. So leading up that way against a wall, and they can sort of climb up or stretch out against it.) (Funnily, her cats have none of that, but then they're dying in toys and activities and a garden anyway. Well, they do have several scratching posts, whether homemade or otherwise, come to think of it.)

<cross-posting. You are being a little specific, no?
--> Oh I see, you mean one of 'em prefab cat trees toy thingies. I don't know, our cats have one but really aren't so big on it, they've just recently and finally discovered it's OK for sleeping in. One could again easily construct one of one's own I guess. What ours do really appreciate is they have many different levels of shelves and tables and whatnot to hop around on all around the house, also guaranteeing them some peace from one another if needed, or at least a spot to gain the upper hand & tell the others off. This is really important to cats, while they can be very convivial, they are in fact and by nature pretty much solitary creatures after all.>nb Mrs. M. now suggests for those of us who are really unhandy, just lay down/hang up a coir mat if that's what it's called, and if available there, so a rough cocos fibre mat. I suppose any (rough) doormat would do really. Move around occassionally to keep it exciting. Outside, they'll just go look for a tree or something; so a piece of timber might serve just as well. |

Pity, that I hardly understand your language. Was it English? Sorry..... really hard
But what I understood, that the message doesn't contain any information where to buy cat accessories in Mumbai ![]() |

I'll try and rewrite it in plain and simple terms next time I get around to it.
Meanwhile, a simple piece of advice to all (prospective) pet keepers: Check first what you'll be able to do for them and provide them with, then decide on getting the pet. |

Uh yes! I thought mac's message was very clear, and it's definitely in English! I speak several languages (French, Spanish, Italian, and various Indian ones), as I'm sure others here do but the board language is English so that'll have to suffice.Quote:
Like Capt_M & Mac, my family and I made our own cat tree because I don't like the carpeted stuff they sell at most local shops in the U.S. Sisal rope is widely available in India, here too. We just wrapped sisal rope around a cylindrical piece of wood, stapled the 2 ends. Done. Took about 5 minutes, and cost was less than $3. In India, you can get a plain coir mat as Mac said and it can be a horizontal scratching surface. Also rice bags made from burlap are great scratchers, also free. You can always nail it to a wooden board if you want something that won't move around. You can also hang sisal wrapped around a piece of cardboard from a door knob. I also have just 2-3 plain tree logs from outside that mine love. I laid one on the floor, and another is at an angle. Cost - 0$/Rs Hope I didn't confuse you further. Just offering alternatives since I have yet to see a scratching post or a cat tree at an indian store. ![]() |

Guys..... Thank you very much, I know how to do scratching post at home. I am enough knowledgeable about these things. My question wasn't about that. I asked if anybody knew where I could buy it...and especially cat tree.
So far looks like nobody knows. |

Marmusha,
Maybe it is quite simply that pet accessories have not yet become available in Mumbai shops. I know our cats prefer the furniture anyway, however many "toys" they are given to play with. ![]()

Dear God, Mach, the OP's lucky it's you. Why can't you just give the man the bloody address he asks for ? All these practical tips are neither here nor there, really. Oh and btw. My 4-month-old cat was getting bored with her home-made tree (a log covered in sisal rope) and liking the couch better every day. So I attached strings from the top of the tree, and from the tree I hung bells and kid toys that bump and sound and move in the wind. That got the feline's attention. Just mentioning this to cat-lovers here, though I realize it's of absolutely no interest to the OP... |

Khandoma - our new kitten preferred the couch too. I applied some sticky tape, and that deterred him enough to break the habit. Now he's using the posts and trees just like the adult cats. My kitten likes shiny noisy things too much like yours
