Rent is high
Rent in an upmarket Mumbai location like Bandra or South Mumbai will take away your entire 130k dollars.
Where is the Mumbai office located? Where [how far] will you choose to live? [commuting in Mumbai is a nightmare] This will determine the rent. Even in Andheri and similar areas, the rent will be Rs 40k to 50k per month [1000 to 1250 dollars] for a decent two bedroom flat. If you have schoolgoing children etc... It all depends....

130 K would be very good amount. I would say that you will be spending USD 15-20K in rent per annum in a good locality.

Then you may opt to stay at Powai only. There are pretty good apartments at Powai built by Hiranandani builders.Although no idea about schools, but I feel there should be good schools in the vicinity. Also you may get less expnesive staying options at Vikhroli, which is nearby. If you opt to stay at Vikhroli, Ghatkopar will be the place to look out for good schools.

New buildings etc at Powai
It is better to stay at Powai itself. The construction quality is better and you have a large choice of newly built buildings.
Since its a well developed colony now [Hiranandani], schools are very much there. I don't have any knowledge about their quality etc. but its not likely to be bad because a lot of up-market IT people have moved here.... [just an assumption] Andheri [East} has many good schools and its not really far from Powai... a commute of 15 to 20 mins without traffic and double that with traffic. |

Powai is fine so long as your priorities are work, your children, and quality of life for your family.
Socially it's a dead end and a rather boring place with little to offer except a KFC and a Pizza Hut. That said the prices there are far more reasonable than South Mumbai, where trust me, you do not want to be paying for your own rent. You have no chance of affording something decent south of Andheri because the supply is so low and the demand is enormous. Make sure they throw in things like a car and driver, ample flight tickets. 130K is not that much money in reality if you are trying to live a lifestyle that's even semi western. This is not bangkok, the place is not cheap, high end Mumbai is extortionately overpriced. I suggest you visit India before committing yourself to it. |

In Powai-
There is Hakone (Not sure about the name) Entertainment zone. Over there they have bowling alleys, coin operated games, Go karting track etc., Plus there is one fine dine restaurnat, don't remember the name. There is one beautiful garden developed by Hiranandani. Powai Lake is there. I have read somewhere it is being developed as a tourist destination. Ronak. |

We live in Powai (Hiranandani gardens) with a 2 year old and a baby on the way, and this is in my opinion one of the best area's to live with a family. We have parks and pavements, so I'm able to walk to shops and school, even with a buggy.
About schools, there are a few nurseries for children from 2 years old, I've now found one I'm really happy about. Later on it depends if you're looking for Indian or international schools. There are a few Indian schools nearby, but don't know anything about those. The expat children here all commute to the American school, which takes 20-25 minutes in the morning, an hour coming back. But apparently that is not much worse than going there from Bandra. |

One query,is the salary you mention gross or net of tax? If it is net then you will end up paying about 30% of your salary as income tax.
In addition as far as I know good quality family size flats in the Hiranandani area in Powai are at monthly rentals of USD 3000/- equivalent. Schooling costs for the expat schools like the American school are also pretty steep. Cheers! |
