Hi All,
Hoping someone here can help me! I'm looking for someone to file my US taxes, without paying an arm and a leg. I know I can go to some of the big players but they're too expensive, and some of them won't do one-off individual filings. Does anyone know of an accountant, etc. who could handle this? I'm in Mumbai and I know I saw something about this somewhere recently, but could not find a reference in the forum search. I would be enormously grateful if anyone here can help. Thanks! |

If your taxes are pretty straight-forward, why not file online with Turbo Tax? If you are working in India and living there most of the year and your income is less than $80k/yr., then you don't have to pay US tax. You still have to file, but you can take the foreign residency exemption. I wouldn't bother with accountants unless your taxes are particularly complicated i.e. investment income, sale of property, etc

You can use TAXACT.COM which would cost < $15.00 with e-file.

Online tax programs are...questionable
I've used Tax Cut (HR Block) the past 2 years and gotten the package where a tax pro with experience in your particular set of taxes is supposed to review. Last year, it went ok--I felt reasonably confident that my taxes were prepped sort-of correctly. However, this year, I had to chase the 'tax pro', insist that she give me responses to my questions, and she just generally did not seem to have a clue about international taxation. I asked her to look at my stuff from last year and she still seemed really clueless. In the end, I just filed with a prayer and a hope for the best! (yes, clearly a good strategy...).
I saw somewhere, and am now kicking myself for not being able to find it, a reference from someone for a tax person in Mumbai who can do international taxes. Unfortunately, as I said, I cannot find that anywhere, so now I'm looking to see if anyone else knows where I might have found that! ![]() |

Have you thought about contacting the embassy and asking them about qualified people. They should have a list of people.
