Supermarkets...?

Hi - where are the supermarkets in Indian cities? I am moving to Delhi/Mumbai and have been o a few trips here and never seen any supermarkets/grocery stores. I am now in Mumbai for a few days and would love to find one. Any in south Mumbai near Marine drive/Colaba/Fort area?

And, while I am thinking about it, any in south Delhi that are worth noting?

Thanks.

I was also very surprised on my first time in India, at the lack of supermarkets! There simply aren't any of the usual large ones we're used to in the west.

It's a nice refreshing change!! Long live the bazaars :-)

Sorry, Mrs G, can't help you with the info you're seeking. Hope someone comes along to assist you with that.

There are several Big Bazaars including one in Colaba. I read about this chain "Fresh" but not sure it's open yet:

Apna Bazar Co-op is good, but it's in Chembur. There are several Sahakari Bhandar locations as well. There's also Godrej's Nature's basket:

There's also Spencer's, which is a large supermarket chain in India. I'm not sure where you'll be located, but we used to use the one in Bandra regularly. It's not huge, but it had a decent range of products.

Given the population of foreigners in South Delhi , most market have shops where you can get just about anything... Jorbagh ,or for example Defence Stores in Defence colony cater to everything

I dont know if you are still in Mumbai, Mrs G, but there is a decent sized and well stocked Big Bazaar at the Orchid Mall at Bombay Central. There are small Reliance Fresh outlets at Warden Road, Tardeo [opp. Crossroads], Chira Bazar and perhaps elsewhere in South Mumbai too but they are small and not well laid out. There is a small Nature's Basket at Warden Rd next to Reliance Fresh which is quite expensive. There is a Sahakari Bhandar at Worli, Colaba and Warden Rd but I think they have been taken over now by Reliance. Big Bazaar is better stocked.

In the eastern and western suburbs there are plenty of Big Bazaars, D Mart, Hyper mart and other supermarkets.

Real estate in south Mumbai is astronomical in cost, perhaps that is why there are no big supermarkets around.

Also, Indians especially us Mumbai residents, are used to buying groceries etc. from our local "kirana" stores, which though small, stock just about everything, do free home delivery and give good service. And as most other Indians, we prefer market fresh vegetables any day, although it must be admitted that Big Bazaar offers fairly decent veggies at a competitive price. I personally prefer fruits and veggies from the market and Im sure there will be quite a few like me, who do too.
