Welcome to Indiamike, Mumbai Mum - and congratulations to you and your husband on your little bundle - how exciting!

I currently live in Mumbai, Powai and agree with everything rohit2travel has said - the other thing about Powai is that the air is cleeaner, than in central mumbai - the hospital here is fabulous. I originally wanted to live in Bandra/Juhu - but have to say after hearing of the rents, and some friends experiences am so happy we choose Powai - which is why we are continuing to live in this area.

We are just moving into a new apartment - if you need a contact (realsestate agent I have a good one my husband and I have used)
You can get a BEAUTIFUL brand new 4 bed 2200sqft apartment in lake homes for approx 60 - 90, 000 RPS p/m - good time to go shopping for one!

Yes you are in for a massive culture shock - I find it mezmerizing in it's rawness - it will take you some time to adjust- so don't be hard on yourself. There are plenty of people on here - and living here that can help, or point you in the right direction.

Stay in touch, you know how to get us if you need us!

wow, honeysol, that sounds like quite a bargain! (4 bed 2200 sqft apt for so cheap!) we'd be interested in having the contact info for the real estate agent you're using. thanks for helping!

Powai is in Hilly area so flooding is not that much problem, during 26 july when Mumbai was full of flood effected with rain still that time in powai it was manageable.

And one more important note according to news paper even if Tsunami will come in Mumbai, powai will be safe as its in hill

seems like powai is the way to go. i noticed a few other members on this forum with powai as their location. i brought it up with the husband and he was concerned that maybe i would be bored during the day living there. but with the big expat community and green areas that is unlikely, no?

and would it be unwise to travel alone (well, with my young baby) to crowded market areas during the day?

does that sounds cheap if your husband is earning 150 000 per month indian rupees? 90 000 for rent means you will be left with 60 000 for expenses living in a high cost area.
My post is in no way demotivating you, please dont take it in wrong sense. I would best recommend you spend as much time as you can on internet. try search in google india website for indian results only . such as open website google.co.in not google.nl or google.co.uk depending upon your country.
Do more homework, as much as possible, that will help you in clothing, liviingstyle, food and everything.

Regarding baby, get vaccination done beforehand and take along required stuff for next 3-6 months. By the time he/she will settle down to atmosphere of india, tiny tot will be happy enough to stay in india!

One benefit is your son will be more tougher being in india than you both, as his immune system will be simply robust enough to discourage any normal infections like me in europe or unlike my colleagues here!

Enjoy your stay and keep this thread rolling in with questions.
good luck!

ohhh no, no i meant that 150,000 is just for the housing allowance. all the terms of the contract aren't set though, so let's just see about that.

we have an appointment this monday for vaccines. but as for the continuation of her schedule- she doesn't need any until 11 months- i was hoping a hospital/clinic in India would have them? not sure.... can you really take vaccines with you??

Hey again Mumbaimum - re housing costs - will absolutely give you contact - prices are normally MUCH higher in Mumbai full stop (similar to NY)- but Powai in my view definately gives you more bang for your buck, and because of the recession there's quite a bit floating around.

You probably could bring vaccinations in - with a letter from your doctor - however I think you'll be very pleasantly surprised at how advanced, clean and nice the hospitals are (especially Powai) I know, it was nothing like I was expecting.

I'll PM you the realestate agent we have been dealing with.

ohhh! lol well i'm not sure it will matter since the apt costs are being covered 100% by my husband's company. we've heard that the up-front costs can be ridiculous and of course we'd rather avoid that. the main concern at the moment is that he'll have about 3 weeks to choose a place while working full-time, starting in May. does anyone know if that seems likely or unlikely? to find a decent 3 bedroom, western style apartment probably in bandra west or powai (for about 150,000 p/month) within 3 weeks?

Ask your hubby to be ready for toughness ahead!
Try to contact multiple agents and not rely on one agency/agent. And follow them up twice/thrice than only one call. This is to make sure viewing are booked on proper times and telling them that you want it to be punctual. Multiple agents and bookings will help you in wider range and more choices to finalise early than being ended up with one agent. That might be bit high in range , you never know. If you interact more and get more free information, you will have more knowhow about the process thr. It's all hard work, if possible try landing few days before you start job.

Flooding in Bandra/Powai

Hi Mumbai Mum,

There should not any flooding problem in Powai, but I guess Bandra might have some issues, particularly when its rains heavily and the sea tide is high.

In Mumbai the rains start in June.

By the way did you check out the video links i sent in my earlier posting abt Hiranandani Gardens. Also if you are looking out for apartments there, there is another option. You can directly approach the Hiranandani office where they deal with properties of NRIs which they manage and rent it out. that way you would lot of options in terms of choosing a particular block and even get to know the realistic rent. The advantage there is that you would be assured of good service and can save on brokerage also, even if your husband's company is taking care of the accommodation.

Cheers, Raghu

Powai

Hi Mumbai Mum,

I was living in Mumbai earlier and had frequented Hiranandani township many a times to visit my Expat colleagues. The place is not crowded like South Mumbai or Bandra especially the markets.

The roads are neat and broad. The Haiko mall is a happening place and there is lot of open space, greenery which gives a breath of fresh air unlike the crowded neck to neck apartment in most parts of Mumbai. If you take an apartment say above the 25th floor or so, then you just have to open the balcony windows or the french doors for the fresh air to flow in to the entire house and you dont even have to switch on the AC or fan.

Just have a look at the below link including the photogallery.

http://www.planetpowai.com/

Just a caution, incase u take up an apt at Hiranandani, just ensure that the railings on the balcony are protected with mesh or something little high so that it would be safe for your little kid.

Bye, Raghu
