Sudden move to Mumbai....
Hello,
My husband was recently moved to a job post in Mumbai. We have only been given about a month's notice, and since we've never even been to Mumbai before, we are equally excited and nervous. A complication is that we have a four month old baby to bring along... We hardly know where to begin and since there are a billion questions to ask, I'll just put it this way- What advice/tips/recommendations do you have for a family with a young child suddenly moving to Mumbai? We're particularly concerned about the baby's health (vaccines, etc.). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi Mumbai Mum,
Welcome to Mumbai. Could you please let us know where from you are moving to Mumbai. as it would help to spell out the differences / Culture Shock etc. Also shoot out a few questions that you may have in mind ( housing, shopping, Hospitals, Hotels etc ) and we would be able to answer your queries to the best of our ability. Best Wishes, Raghu Quote:

ok yes i should have been more specific!
we are already both expats. i am american and he is danish, but we live in holland. i believe his job will be somewhere near the mumbai airport. we will want to live somewhere convenient for him to get to work and also for me to get to lively shopping areas. recommendations for good neighborhoods and apartments, hospitals, pediatricians, for expats would be great! not 100% sure what the budget for the apartment will be yet but probably your typical expat package around 150,000? rs. p/month. |

HI Mumbaimum,
Welcome to Mumbai.. Well, if your husband is going to work near Airport, there is a good place to stay called Powai.. Lot of expats are staying currently there. I really do not know about the rent - a good accomodation would range between Eur 800 to 1000.. If accomodation is provided by the company, it is better to stay there. You have everything in and around that place.. It is a city by itself. Hope this helps.. free to clarify you any further doubts.. |

Commuting by car from Bandra West to Andheri is fine. However, for driving in Mumbai you should have a driver - I've stayed in Europe for 4 years - it would be very difficult for a European to drive in Indian roads (traffic and adherence to rules).

Mumbai Residence Localities
Hi Mumbai Mum,
Bandra West is also a nice happening place, but the rent for a decent two bed apt ( Expat Quality ) would be 2 lakhs plus. As mentioned by our other member, try having a look at Powai. Hiranandani Gardens in Powai is a integrated residential locality with nice apartments. There is a school, hospital, and shopping area. There are numerous expats and it is close to the airport too. Below is a link, where you can get to see You Tube Videos of the township. You would get an apartment suiting your budget. http://www.google.co.in/search?hl=en...e+Search&meta= Raghu |

powai (hiranandani gardens) seems like a nice place. what is considered the "city center" of mumbai and how long is the drive from the center (if there is one...) to powai? any estimates? assuming we have a driver, of course... |

There is nothing like a city centre or square in Mumbai.. If you need to go to a "happening place", then you need to visit South Mumbai (called the financial district) where Marine Drive and other places are there.
Driving time is totally based on the time you decide for travel. South Mumbai should be about 30 kms from Powai (my own estimation - may be +/- 5 kms). It would take about 30-40 minutes early in the morning to an hour and a half (average) in the peak hours (office time).. You should understand the topography of mumbai. The population from suburbs move to south mumbai for work - so in the morning hours, there is bumper to bumper traffic from suburbs to south Mumbai and in the evening it is vice versa. |

ok the direction of the traffic flow is helpful to understand. so i guess it's safe to assume that my husband's work location (near the airport- andheri) won't be as much of a trouble to commute to if we live south of his work (in other words traveling north in the morning, the opposite of most other people?) although i get the feeling we'll be in for a shock regardless when it comes to traffic in mumbai.... =P

Mumbaimum,
Hiranandani Gardens would be a good place for you to live since it is an integrated township, so in terms of restaurants, healthcare (for your baby), shopping etc it's pretty convenient. However, the access roads in & out of Powai aren't too great, so it would probably increase your travel time if you need to go to South Mumbai. Bandra would be a good place for you to stay as well, however, although your husband is going to be travelling in the opposite direction to most people, he's still going to face a great deal of traffic - will be a commute of at least 45 mins in the morning if he's travelling between 8.30 and 9.30am. You could also think about staying in Juhu/Andheri West - close to your husband's workplace and also pretty good in terms of lifestyle (easy access to healthcare, malls, theatres, restaurants, bookshops etc - will give you things to do if you're not working and want to go out!) Be prepared for a lot of traffic when you come to Mumbai though! |

Hi,
I stay in powai, and yes lot of Expat do stay over here in hiranandani, Its a good place, there is a lake near, I.I.T where you will find lot of greenery inside peaceful place, Morning Traveling towards airport won't be problem, if he is working near international airport it will take around 20 mins traveling distance, but then Powai Hiranandani itself is a happening place where you can do shoping clubbing in zwigs and rodas, there is a international standard LH Hiranandani Hospital, and there is a child specialist hospital also in Powai called Padmavati Hospital. Access to any outskirt are also easy u can exit from here during weekends like pune and loghad and some other interesting places. From Powai you can travel towards suburb and west easily.. Like you can go towards Andheri SHopper stop or mulund lifestyle Rmall some of the big malls and happening places in same amount of time..!! Cherrs!! You are moving to a Spiritful city!!..Lot of Buzz you will encounter with!! ![]() |
