studying in mumbai

hi all!

im an anthropology student from europe, with one year left till graduation. this year i have lived in mumbai and loved it... and now trying to find ways how to go back.

im looking for an advice on masters degree courses in whether psychology, social work or journalism.

does anyone know which universities would accept foreigners who dont speak hindi.... how much do the courses cost... is it possible to work (will need to earn for a living) while you study... how much sense does it make to study all that (heard that psychology isnt exactly up-to-date and that journalism studies are very localized...).

will be very grateful for any help whatsoever

apsara

Hi Apsara,

It won't be possible to work with a student visa. That would be illegal .You might need a employment visa for that.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

I am not sure whether a combined visa exists(I have never heard of it and would be inclined to say no to be frank). But on a different note,i think you can take weekend classes and even though it would be illegal ,you can go ahead .(My own personal views i must add).

Wishing you well,

In mumbai employers do not look is you have a student visa etc. They dont really care. (except some really big multinationals.) My pals been living in mumbai for 1 year and goes every 6 months to pakistan or nepal to get his visa extended.

I think you would need to ask your previous college .

or xaviers college

uh huh. thx.

btw, does anyone know anything on Tata institute of social sciences? recognised in the west? expensive? how expensive? do they provide you with a place to stay? (very optimistic i know ) and where is it located? and is a degree from anthropology enough to get there? or i need to physically get myself there, do my entrance exam and risk not getting in?

and does anyone know, in order to prove your knwledge of english, do you need TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge certificates?

thanx,
Anu

Studying in India

im looking for an advice on masters degree courses in whether psychology, social work or journalism. does anyone know which universities would accept foreigners who dont speak hindi....

Check out the following link for information about college’s in India http://indianstudentsnetwork.com/ISN...hread.php?t=27

Most of the college’s in India use English, so don’t worry you can find a college easily.

how much do the courses cost...

The cost depends on the college, so once you finalize the college you have to contact the college to find out the cost.

is it possible to work (will need to earn for a living) while you study...

You cannot work with a student visa

what about orivate piano or ballet lessons? would that be illegal?

If you have these talents you can make good amount of money. No one cares if you have a work permit if you just teach these skills at your place or at the students place, but if you want to join a company then you will require a work visa.

how much sense does it make to study all that (heard that psychology isnt exactly up-to-date and that journalism studies are very localized...).

You are right not everything that is taught in India will be useful to you, you have to do your research and find out what can add value in terms of money. Check out this link http://members.tripod.com/~jennifer_...es/frames.html the girl in this site studied social service in India.

Hostel housing is a bit grim. However graduate student housing is a step up if you don't mind sharing. I have done each level. Best, marry a grad. student and get married quarters!!

Apsara, I don't have too much direct experience with education in India, but from what I've seen and heard, and judging from your country of origin, I think studying in India might an expensive option.

As about what course to choose, I for one would by all means not choose to study Psychology in India; the importance given to these disciplines here is very low, there are few students, very few practicing professionals, and probably very little research going on, so I think that the academic standard is low and the approach outdated.

About accommodation: all good institutes have their own hostels, and they're pretty good. At least I was surprised to see that offering rooms with single occupancy is not at all uncommon here (it would be sheer luxury back in my home country).

Tata Institute of Social Sciences is a good one, btw.
