Ship my stuff or not?
Hi All,
My first post. We will be moving to Mumbai soon. Already identified our accommodation. Thing is, we are unsure if we should ship in our houseful of things like beds, dining set, sofa, TVs, computer. Anyone knows if these items will be taxed and by how much? Or should we just get rid of these and buy new ones in Mumbai? Or are they too expensive there? Hope to hear from some of you soon. Thanks. |

StarAnise, welcome to India Mike. Hopefully some Mumbai members will come and help you here.
Things like TV, washing machine, computer, beds and bedding, dining sets, sofas etc. are all available here and often at less cost. If you don't see what you want, items can be made for you very quickly, to your design (in the way of home furnishings).

I guess it will be easier to buy these things here.
You havent mentioned the port where you would be shipping these from. But irrespective of that fact - i feel it will work out cheaper to buy here locally. Additionally it shall save you the task of having these custom cleared and also warranty related issues on imported items in case of malfunction in future. |

If your company pays for it, ship it. If not, think about it seriously.
Try to get offers from professional relocation agencies. They will take away from you most of the hazzle with customs and all this stuff. Compare prices. How much will it be to ship a container? How much will you have to pay for air freight of your personal belongings that you want to bring to India anyway... Take into consideration the value of your goods. If on the higher side, do you really want to throw away everything. There is no general answer to your question. |

There may be many other ways, though, in which such an agency can smooth your passage and settling. Don't expect them to be cheap, but corporate staff are their bread and butter, and if the company is paying, then you may find their services worth while. |

It all depends from where are you shipping your effects from? If from Within Asia, the total relocation cost shall be much much less than in comparison to shipping it from, lets say, USA or UK. regds, Vineet. |
