I saw some messages in different forums on this. In case its a repitions, pl ignore.
Area of work; South Mumbai 1. Monthly pay for a Housemaid (pl. specify whether cooking is included, how many hours etc) 2. Monthly pay for Driver (How many hours, only driving or some household chores also) 3. Cook (Generally I thought that house maid does cooking but if not, pl. specify how many hours, 3 meals or less in a day etc) 4. Do you provide accomodation also. Thanks for your help !! |

Hi , welcome to mumbai. We stay at colaba so I hope the above information is of help. Prices wary even in south mumbai depending on location. you may have to provide accomodation if you want a maid for the full day, it depends on your requirement. I think having a live in maid leaves you with no privacy. Hope this is of help regards mani |

Wow I think we are seriously over paying! We have just moved to Malabar Hill and are paying a full-time maid/cook Rs. 8000 per month! Although she is not living with us.

Just to give a comparison to get an idea of how much one should pay for househelper in south Mumbai:
I leave in north Mumbai (Borivali). We pay our househelper Rs.2000/- per month plus breakfast, lunch and evening tea. She works for 12 hours from 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. except on Saturdays and Sundays when her working hours is 8.30 a.m.to 5.00 p.m. Her works includes looking after my 3 years old grand daughter, kitchen works like preparing chapatis, chopping vegetables etc., sweeping, dusting and washing cloths in washing machine. |

My experience is that it all depends on whether you want an english speaking person. These are not easy to find, and charge a lot more. We pay our maid/nanne RS 6500/month, she works mo-fri, up to about 8 hours a day. She cleans the house, takes care of our son several hours a week and does every chore I ask her to do. We had a lot of trouble finding a driver (we live in Powai), because the companies with expats around here pay them a lot more than we can afford. I think a company driver often gets more than Rs 10000/month, we have just found one who has agreed to Rs 7500/month.

..... Not really
Rent for a half decent one bedroom apartment in any of the areas where middle class Indians and ex-pats live will be around 2500 Rs. The loan for the advance on rent and deposit will add another 500 per month in interest. Food is cheap, but everybody has a pay-as-you go Airtel or Reliance Mobile - so that adds another 100 Rs. But if you sleep in the basement or in a shared room and never get ill, it can be done .... just about. Some people will have several jobs and also generate other income (from recycling newspapers for example) and this helps make ends meet. We paid 7000 Rs per month for a housekeeper (but she left - so we're looking again) - which was on the high side, but she spoke good English. The driver is on 5,500 Rs, but gets regular tips for weekends/late evenings so makes around 6000 Rs. Ex pats are generally expected to pay more and get less in return. If anyone knows of a good housekeeper in the Juhu/Santa Cruz area I'd be interested. As a wage comparison - shop assistants in a supermarket and housekeepers in hotels will get around 3,500-4000 Rs in the metros. |

Actually not at all a bad salary here in Chennai, and more than many of the shop assistants, hotel staff, etc that you meet here will be earning. A labourer on a building site may be earning as little as 3 to 4 thousand --- or less.
Not many people live alone, so there is often more than one income coming in for a family. That's looking on the optimistic side; it is also not unusual for a domestic worker to be supporting a drunk husband and child. Chennai has the 'advantage' that poor and rich housing is very intermixed. I know one ironing couple near my old house whose rent, in a govt-owned flat, is Rs.25 a month. However, whe the government chucked them out for three months to repair the place, they could find nothing local for less than Rs1,500, which was financially devastating for them. Luckily they were able to find help to pay. These days I leave it all up to Mrs N --- We have daily help to sweeps the garden and gives occasional help in the house. As we are discovering her to be a good person, this will probably increase. It is probably unusual to be able to try out one's staff outside the house first! It's a good system!
