Price for flat in Bombay

Hie, my name is Anne. I am a french journalist moving to Bombay next december.
I'd like to know how much a room in a flat (with 2 or 3 other persons) will cost me per month (on average, just to have an idea).
Thank you for responding me,
Anne

Depends on the area (location) you wish to rent the place in and also the area of the flat you wish to rent (number and size of room/s, facilities, furnished or unfurnished, etc). When you are sharing with someone else it becomes much less but then you have to find a partner to stay there with. Anything from a few thousand to lots of thousands is what you would expect to pay in the metropolis with the highest rates in India for real estate.

Cheers,
Aadil.

Finding accommodation in Mumbai (don't know about other cities in India) can be a real headache.

If you want to share with others, you can either go through a broker (who will charge one month's rent commission) or you can try and find something yourself. You won't find many people advertising for housemates in the newspapers, so internet is probably your best bet. There is a very good bombay expats group on yahoo, and secondly facebook, and there are often expats offering accommodation. These are very good sites to meet people and there are regular events.

You might prefer to stay with expats initially. Certainly, living with an Indian family might not be a wonderful Indian experience- from what i've heard a lot of them are just interested in the money, although I had a good experience in the past.

Good luck!

rent in a nice area such as bandra will be approx Rs 15,000 per person- most expats in shared accommodation would pay that much more or less.

Anne, it all depends on where you want to stay, and where u want to stay will be dictated by where your work takes you. Distances are huge, and with traffic being the way it is, even molehills become mountains. So if ur paying 15k for a room in Bandra, you might luck out by paying just 5k in New Bombay if ur area of work is there.

Bandra - Juhu

Hey Anne,

well considering that fact that you are a journalist and will be travelling as a part of your job, i guess the Bandra- Juhu strech along the western line will suit you best. its is bang in centre of mumbai .... well nearly and has easy acess to all places around the city... well with regards to the rent, if you looking to rent an exclusive flat, it will cost you a bomb somwhere in the range of INR 40k - 50k, but if u looking to share it with a couple of people then i guess it should come within quite close to 11k.

Have fun in mumbai.

C ya ..

Trick is to cut out the brokers. But 11 000 will not get you much. 20 000 can get you comfort in the mid town area.

Hi Anne,

In addition to the rent, you (if you live alone) / room mates will also need to shell out a deposit for the apartment. It's a one time payment, usually around 10 or 12 months rent and is refunded when you leave.

Keep this in mind, higher the rent, higher the deposit, also try living in the area before signing the contract, you don't want to be miserable later, if viable try living close to your workplace [commuting can be a pain in Bombay]

office commute

Most important is the office commuting time [if you have to commute every day, that is]

Decide your residence location as near to your place of work as possible. Minimize your office commute.

The daily commute will take up a LOT of your time if you stay far from your office.

Hi Anne,

I am also French, working in Andheri, northen suburb of Mumbai since last november and am still looking for a flat as well. It is not that easy, 1 furnished BHK costs from 18 to 25 000 INR then you have at least 1 lakh deposit and 1 month rent to give to the broker. In the end I am going to share a flat. Where in Mumbai do you want to settle? Have you already arrived?
Don't hesitate to contact me.

It all depends in which area you want a flat. The prices may vary as per the location.
