Another question about the taxes....

The company has an offshore HQ (quite likely on paper only) and has some other foreign nationals (I believe not NRI's) working for them.

This makes me think they could likely do the taxes the Hungarian way: paying enough in India to enable the work permit, and the rest elsewhere.

Is that as common as I'm guessing? It's certainly within their abilities.

Yes- thats what you should agree - get the salary paid in two components - one paid offshore and another locally. Whatever be the case, negotiate any tax liability in India(current or future or contingent) to be on the employer's account.

This is quite common.

If theyhave any expenses already in that country it will be very easy for them and if they have income in that country, easier.

If they'r saying 12-14, u insist on 16, some ask for 18 and when they have have 16 in mind, thats the way in India.

11 years experience in IT is valuable - more so if you've had stints in the US and Europe. So try and push the Rs1.2mn to Rs1.6mn-1.8mn. No reason to sell yourself short. Also, cost of living in Mumbai is a bit high - domestic help, a car, 3 nights out in a week... these will cost some. Though you'll be comfortable with Rs1.2mn and accomodation and transport provided by them, savings will be negligible.

Thoug the way the Indian Rupee is going against the USD, you'll make some decent exchange gains!!!
