They are a bunch of fanatics who for cheap political reasons have waged a war on Non Maharashtrians in Mumbai. Their school of thought is that people from other states (specially Bihar & UP) have flooded into Mumbai and taken the jobs away from the locals. Don't be surprised if they dissaper in 6 months time. Elections will be over by then. |

don't know how you quote messages (sorry, i'm quite new on forums
),but your message capt mahajan was funny ! i can imagine flight attendants being uneasy about the word, not wanting to offend customers and trying to content everybody ! as for me, i'll probably follow your advice brishti and will go for what comes first in my mind ! |

Slightly off topic but pertinent. If you address a letter to Calcutta rather than Kolkata there is a good chance it will not be delivered, does the same apply in Bombay / Mumbai?

No problem there - it will reach its destination. As long as you indicate what the name is of the building opposite the building you want to send the mail to, of the landmark at the end of the street and the roads that are nearby
Just joking.. Mumbai / Bombay - put India on it and it will get in India, after that the post-people don't really care. They know where Bombay is and where Mumbai is. I noticed in some recent conversations I had that the poeple in the far suburbs (near Thane) refer to the South as Bombay, using Mumbai for the whole area. ("She comes all the way from Bombay to work here" about someone who lives on Nepean Sea Road.) But maybe that was an exception. |

When I lived in Bandra and in Versova earlier and wanted to go down town i.e. to South Bombay, I too would say I am going to "Bombay" as did just about everyone else. |

As part of the non-Indian expat crowd, with our friends, it's a toss up on who uses Bombay and who uses Mumbai. It seems to depend on how long they've been here. The long-termers say Bombay. Newbies say Mumbai. We've only used Mumbai because that's the name now and also didn't want to offend using the old name. Now it's just habit.
We live in Bandra. Whenever my friends and I talk about going south, we say: "I'm going down to Churchgate", We're eating at the Indigo Deli down south" or "I have to drive to the South today--To where?--Colaba". Odd. We consider all of Mumbailand to be "the city". That includes the northern suburbs as if they're just different areas such as the Bandra part of Mumbai. Never thought about them as traditional suburbs. Guess they really are. |
