I love Mumbai, and I'd ideally like to find a place to stay for 6 months out of the year that is:

close enough to Mumbai to drive in for the day to get the city ammenities

but

far enough away to get better air, lower population density, definately cheaper rents! Is it crazy to think it can be done close to the coast?

I thought you liked south India; keep us posted on life in Mumbai once you get settled.

Yes.

Alibaug is a few hours drive from New Bombay. Murud etc are further south.

ISN knows I love south India very much, especially Tamil Nadu. In my mind, I had always considered Mumbai to be "sort-of-south". Right KSB: in the middle! I am a long time student of a type of yoga with headquaters in district Thane, so I am interested in being close to that place.

This question comes up in the US as well, as there are many regional differences between The North and The South.

Capt, I have heard there are beautiful places on the coast of Maharashtra south of Mumbai, and I have seen people mention these places briefly on IM as well.

Can anyone speak to these places south of Mumbai?

Is it by any chance you are a student of Ambika Yog Kutir based in Thane? I am also an ex student from the same School.

Currently am living in US but my roots/parents are in Borivali(W).
If you need a nice secluded village type of environment about an hours train ride North of Mumbai. I would suggest a place called Kelwa. The assumption is you will not be commuting to Mumbai daily otherwise daily commute will be too much for you.

It has a wonderful beach and nice small township on the beach.

Kalumama,

Not a student of Ambika Yog Kutir...just the same, Iooked up Kelwa, and it sure looks nice! Will definately add it to my "must see" places to explore around Mumbai. Ganeshapuri is the little town in district Thane I have spent time in over the years.

Now that you mention Yoga ... I must share Thane's special Yoga ancestory. One more plus for Thane!

First some background: My wife is a Yoga fan ... practicing it for last so many years. So naturally she has been "selling" that to me for years ... and I have been resisting that, for no special reason but a natural resistance to wifely pressures.

But just this Feb-2007 I came across this Patanjali School of Yoga.... called Ghantali Mitra Mandal - a Yoga School of 60+ years, in Thane! It seems Thane is special for Yoga Schools ... not just this one alone.

On a sudden whim, I joined their 1 month basic course (fee Rs 100)... The course and the way it was taught was pretty amazing! ...This was a non-commercial pure-yoga school! .... and now I am sold on Yoga!! I continued for another 2 months... till the Himalayan treks intervened. Have to restart that.

Good doctors and hospitals are more closely packed in "South Mumbai" [say Colaba to Bandra][say expensive to live in]. There ARE docs and hosps elsewhere.... but of lesser standard. Thane has Wockhardt Hosp in Mulund nearby, supposed to be very modern, but i don't know abt it personally.

AT: will check out Vashi, Nerul, Belapur on my next trip, as well as Yewooor Hills. Are those places where the train out of Mumbai stops?
Yes. Yewoor Hills are from Thane station.

Yes, but commuting is a verrry long affair, weekend picnicking is perfect.

Today's newspaper mentions that Mumbai is more expensive than some European cities to live in...

Hi,

I was living in Mumbai only for a couple of months in 1996, I was terrified seeing the crowd, and I was born and raised in a city (Chennai) that has a population of around 6 million but the crowd in Mumbai literally terrified me and my first ride on the local train was an adventure. All my friends in Mumbai told me that in order to enjoy Mumbai you should be born and lived in Mumbai for a long time.
