Mumbai apartments
Hi, iwas just wondering if anyone knows of any estate agents in mumbai?
Im looking to rent an aaprtment for around six months and just wanted to find out what sort of choice i have as regards price, location etc. Ideally Im looking for somewhere as cheap as is sensible, I dont want to live in a corrugated iron shack obviously but i dont think my budget will stretch to a condo. Somewhere fairly clean and secure with running water and electric would see me right for abit. Dont really mind whereabouts, I assume the 'burbs will be a lot cheaper than the city centre, whatever, I'm easy, all help is much appreciated. Cheers. |

If you haven't let a place in Mumbai before, it can be a bit of a headache. Landlords are often very choosy about who they take as tenants- you might have to be of a certain religion, background- and it might be hard to get a place for six months only. plus often they ask for a huge deposit.
staying in the suburbs is not necessarily cheaper than town, especially if you are staying in bandra west, or juhu for example. as a rule the west side of the city is more expensive than the east side. bandra is a pretty happening place for young people, with quite a few bars and restaurants, and within bandra you can find reasonable places if you are prepared to live in an "unfashionable" part. For example i pay rs 16,000 for a 1BHK but it is in the market area. but you will be lucky to pay less than Rs 25,000. to get an idea of prices, you can look at magicbricks.com, which has a listing of properties, either direct to the owner or through brokers (who generally charge one month's commission). another option is to join the bombay expats group on yahoo and there are always ads going about for people looking for/ offering flats to stay. Since you are short term you might consider sharing with someone- it would certainly be less hassle. good luck... one of the big achievements in bombay is to find an ok place to live in! |

I think I'm probably looking at under 5000Rs, cheers for the link to magicblocks at least thats shown me that it would be possible to rent somewhere on that kind of budget.
Im white and English do you think this might be a problem with landlords? I've rented in South East Asia before and never had any trouble but this will be my first time in India so I dont really know the score. |

Being white and English will not be a problem, being a single male may be a slight issue for some apartments. Your budget may be a bigger problem, depending on what area you want to live in?
Where do you need to travel to? |

I'm really not to worried whereabouts I am, as long as I'm within walking distance of a train station I'm happy.
If I had a choice I'd rather be near to the action, Colaba, Chowpatty etc. but I'm not to fussed, the money is probably the most important thing. Cheers. |

For 5000 you won't have much choice at all. As FOTM said, your budget will be the bigger (I say biggest) issue.
A smaller issue may be a 6 month lease. Usually a landlord may prefer 11, but maybe you can use the usual 3 months notice period to leave early, or agree to a six month lease at the outset with him. It may help if you indicated if there is an area you have to regularly commute to in Mumbai. That is usually a major input in the decision, in Mumbai. Generally speaking, for 5k I would look at Thane/Ghatkopar on the Eastern side or maybe Borivli/Kandivli on the Western side. Please be aware that the properties 'close to the station' attract a premium, because, like you, everybody wants those even if they are in crowded and noisy areas. I would consider paying guest accomodation, too. |

HI,
For what price you are looking for might take awhile. Try "magicbricks.com" I think that is the name of the site. You can put in your specfics and it will search for you in all areas or just the ones you want to live in. I am paying a bit more than what you want to pay. I live in Worli, nice area the apt is ok. We did have one room apt open, but I think they just rented it. I will be back in Oct. if that is not too late let me know. I will check my building out for you. larki |
