Smile Moving to Mumbai: Stephen

Hi Moving to Mumbai in June 2008 from the UK I am moving to work in Mumbai.
I will be bringing my wife and 14 year old son at end of July.
I need to find a apartment 2-3 bedroom in Bandra or possible Powai I need to find a good expat school for my son.
If i send him to the American school where would be a good area to stay.
I will be working in Navi area.
Like to hear from some expats who have families with them in Mumbai.
Best regards
Stephen

Hi Stephen and welcome to IM. I've moved your post to the "moving to Mumbai" thread since your post contains questions mostly about that subject (and I figure you'll probably get more answers in this forum).

Anyhooo.....good luck.

Stephen, welcome.

If you search this site, you will find these questions have been asked often, and replied too- including by expats.

Probably in the Mumbai or Expat forums (fora?)

Hi Stephen, and welcome to IM,

The secret to a happy life here is ensure that the Office-Home-School triangle is as small as possible.

There must be a mathematical formula for this? The sum of the square on the office-home side is equal to the time you will not spend with your family!

The American School is reasonably handy for Bandra and you could also look at Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu, which is good for Juhu, Andheri, Powai.

The American School is all foreign children, so your son will not be meeting locals. The Ecole Mondiale IB school is around 85% Indian kids.

Depends if you want IB or US education? Fourteen is a critical age for education - so this will be a tough decision .... so if I were you, I'd choose the school first, then find an apartment between the school and work.

Traffic and poor road conditions are big issues - and you'll be arriving in the monsoon when things are at the worst, so try to keep travel to a minimum if poss.

Hope all goes well for you and your family.

offtopic again, but just once, please, for this old joke?

There was an Indian Chief, and he had three squaws, and kept them in three teepees. When he would come home late from hunting, he would not know which teepee contained which squaw, since it was dark. He went hunting one day, and killed a hippopotamus, a bear, and a buffalo. He put the a hide from each animal into a different teepee, so that when he came home late, he could feel inside the teepee and he would know which squaw was inside. Well after about a year, all three squaws had children. The squaw on the bear had a baby boy, the squaw on the buffalo hide had a baby girl. But the squaw on the hippopotamus had a girl and a boy.

So what is the moral of the story?

The squaw on the hippopotamus is equal to the sum of the squaws on the other two hides.

If you send him to the American school in Bandra, you need to write to them immediately. There will probably be a waiting list. Problem is, their school is closed as of May 15 for the school year. Our son (4yrs) is on the waiting list for the EC4 class for Sept, but since he's an American, he will be higher on a waiting list than non-Americans. They also told us that June is a big "move" month--meaning lots of companies move their employees because of the end of the school year so you never know. They said to contact them June 15th and then see what's up--otherwise we have to wait until August---and if still not in, have no idea what we'll do then....

If you want to send him to ASB, Bandra, Santa Cruz or Khar would be best. Worli or Juhu, IMO, my be ok, but still a bit of a drive. It also depends on where you'll be working.

Excellent school with a strong academic record. Very few ex-pats, tough entrance tests and long waiting list. It's right next to the American school.

Stephen, the last I saw it was something like $15K/yr. Brutal. The company pays for it or else we'd never be able to send our kids there----or agree to move here.

The fee for ASB depends on the age of the student. I have the fees here as they were last year, for grades 6-10 they were around $21K/year, and a one-time fee of also $21K. Needless to say the company normally pays for this...
