Moving to Mumbai - Need guidence

Hello,

I am moving to Mumbai for a year from US. I need your help and guidence.

I will be travelling to Andheri West and Navi Mumbai and also Airports (both domestic and international) frequently.

My daughter is almost 5 years old and I would like my daughter to go to an good american or western schools.

I would prefer to live closer to school.

1) So, what's the best area to live?

3) How to find a good agent who can help me in finding the place?

4) Are furnished apts. available in Mumbai?

5) Are serviced apts. available in Mumbai? This is an option if I can't find furnished apt. readily.

6) About car, is it better to buy a car and get a driver on a monthly salary?

Or is it better to get a leased car with a driver?

Any other tips will be appreciated.

Thank you....

Answer to # 6: Buy a car such as Honda Civic - driver can be employed easily for a monthly salary - he'll also be glad to hang around for odd jobs.

Hello,

In Bandra Kurla Complex (to the north-east of Bandra West) is the American School of Bombay, in Juhu is the Ecole Mondiale. Both are international schools but come at a price, they both fill up quite quickly so if you want to enroll your daughter you might consider applying now. If you want to live nearby one of those schools I would say Bandra/Khar or Juhu. Both are nice areas. If you live in Khar West like we do ABS and EM are the same commute (EM is even a bit closer). They both have websites with a lot of info also on how to apply.
Further south is the German School, in Powai I believe there is the Oberoi International School and there is the Bombay Scottish but I do not know where that is.
There certainly are furnished apartments available (we rented one) but not all furnishings might be to your liking, but it is convenient.
Serviced apartments are also an option, some 5 star hotels have serviced apartments (fi Renaissance in Powai, Hyatt in Santa Cruz, Marriott near airport i believe, and some down south) it is nice but it is extremely expensive and it does not feel like home. If you are sponsored by your company it might be an option.
There are relocation agencies which can help you find an apartment and settling in but then again, I would only use it if I was sponsered I do not know the price of those services.
Good luck!

Advice on moving to Mumbai on 1 Year

Hi Sunny,

Welcome to India. Mumbai in particular. I am not sure if you have got the required info as I just saw your post now.

Anyways, I shall try to answer most of your questions.

Not sure if you have firmed up the schooling part. If not just go through the below link which would give you various options.

http://maps.google.co.in/maps?hl=en&...e-results&cd=1

Once you finalise the school then you can look out for accommodation.

Good quality Serviced apartments are not many in number but for the star hotels like the Taj, Marriot, Renaissance and it would cost quite a fortune 3 to 4 lakhs per month and not easily availble.

You may also check out the Hiranandani School in Hiranandani city, Powai which is a self contained township and lot of expatriates are living there. All the apartments are of high standards with utmost priority to Security, facilties like Gym , Swimming Pool etc. They have a very good hospital Hiranandani Hospital.

The place is close to the airport, Andheri and also to Navi Mumbai as required by you.

Given below are two links of Hiranandani gardens aerial view and normal view for your quick reference.

Regarding car, i would suggest that you take a car lease instead of buying as it would save the headache of driver management and car maintainance. The leasing company would provide a spare car incase of breakdown or when it is sent for service, give a replacement driver if your driver does not turn up etc.

Moreover your tenure is only for a year and hence it is advisable not to go in for outright purchase.

Thanks, Raghu Kumar
