Thumbs up Moving to India

Hi All, I am a new member here and found this forum to be very helpful.
Bit abt us: I am indian who is returning to India after spending 5 yrs in NY. My wife is a Korean who will also be coming along.
Queries: I have a very little idea about B'bay n ofcourse I am concerned if my wife will like it. Any helpful suggestion for expats in this regard will be helpful.

1. Which area should I rent a apt. I was thinking sthg cosmopolitan n what should I expect to get for a budget of app.
$2k or Rs 100,000 pm.
2. Any club, activity where expats meet regularly.
3. Any recommendations for learning Hindi, cooking
4. Now I am being too optimistic, but any Koreans out there..On the internet couldn't find any Korean restaurants..any ideas
5. I have decided not to bring any furniture after reading all the posts but still have few bags. Whats the best way to bring it. Should I book it as extra baggage in my flight or a moving co. is better.

Any other ideas/thoughts which you think will be helpful. We are moving in next 2-3 weeks.

You can get a 2 bed or 3 bedroom hall kitchen in the best South Mumbai neighborhood for this rent, but the likelihood of a heavy deposit is distinct [in South Mumbai, at least]

I would call the airlines and check what it cost for extra bags. I have heard each extra checked in bags cost anywhere from $75-$150, offcourse if you are flying bussiness class then the rules are different I think.

Namaste,
Be sure to find out how many kilo's each bag can weight. Also ask how much it costs for freight shipments, get prices and weights?

Good luck with your new life, gregor

Thanks for help guys. I have been informed by my co. that they will pay for the shipment. Now the only thing I need to figure out is what to take back.

Surprisingly when I read comments from expats, they want to buy things from India instead of taking it from US. On the other hand, most Indians who are returning home want to take everything from here like furniture, mattress, electronics n stuff !!

Confused Major??

My recommendation would b to sell ur stuff in the states nd buy everythin here in India. Even though Bombay is by far the most expensive city in India, u wud still manage to buy almost everything from whatever money u get by selling ur second hand stuff in the states..

As far as residence is concerned try establishing a contact in Hiranandani Gardens..powai i hv been there and flats there r real cosmopolitan..u wud find a lot of expat community in that area..

Korean restaurants.. I hv heard abt tian in juhu..but i doubt if they serve any korean food..china valley is ok types..Else u can try top 3 5*s m sure they serve korean food..atleast they do here in delhi!!..

Please don't move off-hand like that. Spend rather 6 months a year in India and if that seems allright after a few years, then think of moving. I met so many NRI's who were truly unhappy after moving back, living on old Bollywood memories of India. They simply 'forgot' or denied what things are truly like and after living in the west, often feel overwhelmed and frustrated rather than happy.
I knew one who was thrilled for about 4 months and then started going back to the US more and more, until he hardly ever returned to India anymore. And that after bringing all his belongings, including his car over there... He had a lot of problems with his flat as well; no water for days on end and this was normal every week.

Also, one odd thing: many NRI's I met could not get jobs. No one wanted to hire them. Odd but a reality. Think of all these things before you move. Of course, Bombay is such a huge city there must always be something...but...

Thanks fardesi. Frankly I did lot of research before deciding to move and have a job offer. Regarding not liking India, I guess initially I might have little frustration but in the end it will be good.
