moving to bombay

My husband and I are moving to Bombay in about 3 or 4 months and we are looking for some help on where to live. We will have a budget of about INR 160,000 a month total for all of our expenses. We are looking for something is a good area as I am white and he is Indian he is concerned about my me being home by myself. He will be working somewhere to the southwest of the city. Any advice would be great.
Thank you

You could check out for apartments in areas like - Prabhadevi, Worli, Napensea Road, Warden Road, Colaba if the work place is in South of Bombay or Bandra, Khar, Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri if the work place is in Western Suburb of Mumbai.

Well the amount that you mentioned can be seen as handsome or paltry based on what kind of acco you are looking at and in which area of Mumbai. A good 3 bed apartment can cost you anywhere from 30K to 100+K depending on the location and the facilities in the building. Clearly South Mumbai is more expensive and so are western suburbs of Bandra and Khar..
So housing is the key , all other expenses are not too depndent on the location and can be easily managed

The money what you told is quite good for mumbai.

You can get nice 2BHK in south mumbai and 3BHK in bandra + khar area. That is again good area but far from south mumbai.

I suggest south mumbai.
(All the facility + descent + crowd + more foreigners + capital hub + more clubs)

Thats quite a handy sum for monthly expenses. I would say that you can get a nice 2 BHK in KHAR area for around 80 K - 100 K. The rest literally depends on the area of workplace. I doubt if you would get a nice 2 BHK in 100 K in South Bombay.. believe you me, you'd be really lucky if you get one.

Hi Candi,

At the outset welcome to Mumbai, India. If the amount of 160 K mentioned by you is exclusive of housing then living in Mumbai is a cake walk. But if you need to manage all expneses like housing , car, living expenses taking in to account that you want to reside in south mumbai then its going to very difficult. since you are in the initial stages of planning, you may just check out the website www.99acres.com which would give you a wide variety of options including possible rentals in Mumbai. Some ad postings have also photogtaphs. You can do this without going to a real estate agent as you just want to have an idea.

Let us know where exactly would be your husband's office and accordingly you can zero in on the housing option and then try to accommodate other expenses. Local commutation by public transport would be very difficult unless its a short distance of 3 to 4 kms where you can use a taxi which are usually non air conditioned. If your husband hires a AC cab and travel around 10 kms up and down to office it would be more expensive.

Lets know more details and I shall see how we can assist you. In the meanwhile you may check out the website. I forgot to mention that payment of security deposit in mumbai is also a headache as one has to shell out depsit amt in lakhs.

About you being in the apartment by yourself, you dont have to worry, You would be safe and we can give you more safety tips in the days to come.

Bye for now, Raghu
