Movers to India

I am planning to move house and office to Mumbai from Washington DC. Any idea on web sites for moving companies? Better still, can someone suggest a firm or two that he/she has had a good experience with? Thanks in advance,

M

Here's a company that would probably look after the whole thing for you: Global Adjustments.

I have not used them as such, but had some contact with them in which they passed on recommendations for other stuff, eg a Chennai-based removals company, to me.

While we can hope to choose the best company to relocate us, it is the subcontractors of that company that may prove the undoing of a happy shift.

When we relocated from Australia we contracted Grace Removal Group to pack and shift our stuff. While the packing was excellent they still stuffed things up. On the day that we left Aust they put the container of furniture on the ship; they were supposed to wait until I requested it in case I wanted it to remain in Aust. A very ignorant and arrogant company as it turned out. In India their agents are Writer Corpoaration who continued messing us about and then when the furniture was delivered it arrived in small local trucks with bad trays and so a number of items were damaged and even with insurance were not claimable due to not being able to get quotes to fix stuff from overseas.

I have used Crown Relocations shifting from New Zealand to Australia with the same container load and had only one plastic container damaged. Crown have their own company here in India and maintain the same high quality international standards. Their trucks are excellent and if you are concerned about the safe arrival of your stuff then this standard is what is required.

Insurance is the issue, as one has to get quotes for repairing etc., if your furniture is hand made, antique, electronic then how can one get a quote from a local within the specified time frame ~ not possible.

Crown do have an office here too used by some to move in and out.

Antiques are not good to bring to mumbai due to humidity etc

This is my suggestion. Since you aremoving from the US, you want movers that specialize in US-India move. Presently, a number of NRI's are returning to India, commonly referred to R2I (Return 2 India!).

I am part of a discussion group about all topics on R2I. There are 2 moving companies that seem most popular.

Disclaimer: I have not used either of them, nor am I specifically recommending either of them. Folks on the discussion group have used them and have their individual opinions. I will contact both of them when the time comes for me to move.

OK, here are their contact info:

1. www.worldwide4shipping.com, 1-800-327-5252

2. www.sky2c.com
tarun tandon, 1-510-673-0910, tarun@sky2c.com

Cheers

One thing to check out is which end to pay... will it cost you less (tax can be a big consideration) if you pay in Rupees in India, or dollars in USA?

While some aspects of Writers service was very efficient and I found the staff very nice there were also considerable difficulties and while I had paid upfront for the door to door delivery I ended up having to pay an extra Rs 25,000 for demurrage charges. I mentioned previously that the delivery vehicles used were really bad which caused damage to our furniture and these are the types of things that crop up to make the process less than pleasant.

So if a company does not use its own vehicles to deliver your precious possessions you are going to have heart ache. The point is to check to ensure that the company that you use has its own delivery system or if it subcontracts to a company like Writers or whomever that then subcontracts the delivery. Many of the companies state that they are ISO 9000 or Quality Assured but the final form of delivery may be below standard and along with this the delivery team are certainly not quality controlled as I saw to my horror. To me there was absolutely no excuse for Writers to use such vehicles and personnel when I had paid Rs 360,000/- for door to door delivery from Australia to Chandigarh.
