Is Kandiwali Westan okay area to live?
I'll be moving to Mumbai in July to volunteer for a human rights place in Kandiwali West for 3 months. It's on Iraniwadi road, I was hoping to find an apartment near work for convenience, is Kandiwali West an okay area to live, or should I live further away and have a longer commute?

If you want daily adventure trips you can think of going farther. It is not a good idea to commute long distances in Mumbai stay as close to workplace as possible it will save you more time and travails of Mumbai travel.

Kandivilli is a sub-urban area and away from south mumbai.. However it is a pleasant residential area and cheaper compared to Bandra etc..
If you are working in that area then its best if you stay nearby. Kandivali East (thakur village area) / Goregaon (film city road) or even Lokhandwala (assuming you will have a car) Depends on what you want - if you have money and enjoy partying etc, stay in Bandra or South Mumbai (dont worry about travel as you can take the trains - you will be going against the flow so it will not be crowded). |

Kandivli, Malad and Borivli would be your options.
Typical Mumbai Western suburbs. Crowded, a little chaotic, but anything you will need will be available there. Perhaps not too many expats, though.

I'm trying to get a map of Mumbai with a scale on it, but I can't find one anywhere. Can anyone tell me how far it is /how long it would take by train to get to the city centre? Say, to Bombay Central? (Is that a good estimate at the centre of Mumbai city?)

Amitkate, really? I'd probably rather be in Kandivali West but I'll certainly give you a call when I get to Mumbai and check it out, what's your email?
And how long does it take to get to the city centre from Kandivali? |

If you consider the city centre for mumbai as the south mumbai/churchgate area, then it would take about 1 hr by train.

All times approximate; long time since I travelled in suburban trains in Mumbai The 'city centre' for a visitor is more likely to be Colaba/Churchgate than Bombay Central. Churchgate would take an hour in the train from Kandivli. Colaba is a ten minute cab ride away from there. But, everything you need, barring a few sightseeing/entertainment options, would be available upto maximum Bandra from Kandivli. Bandra is half an hour or so. |
