Lightbulb how to meet people

I am looking at moving to mumbai next year as my husband is already working there.

I have lived in Asia for 14 years but will be minus children by the time i move.
With no job and no children I am wondering how do you meet people in Mumbai?

I have a small terrier dog and after visiting Mumbai wondered if people take their dogs there.I know my dog has been great for meeting people and exercise.

depending on what country you come from originaly, there maybe some groups of people you can meet through your embassy / consulate.. i know the germans, french and australians are pretty strong in this respect.

Also there are lots of exercise classes, like dance and yoga in the city which are great meeting points too.

What are your interests?

meeting people

I have been able to enjoy the outdoors in Hong Kong which alot of people are unaware exists there.
I have been a keen walker made so by having a dog and this has also opened doors to meeting alot of my present friends.I like to get outside as much as pos not really a gym person unless weather dictates it.
I enjoy craft, exploring and experiencing the areas I have lived in.
Is there anyone out there that has taken a dog to Mumbai or has one as have only seen the ones wandering the streets as need to also decide whether it is the right thing to take my dog.

I am planning to visit Goa in first week of Jan (2007) and fly from Hyd to Mumbai and reach late in the night (11PM). I need to catch a train early in the morning to Goa (from Dadar station). In the meanwhile, I plan to visit Marine drive and Gateway of India (not sure if it is safe there during late night or if security allows there).

Can some one guide me how should (transportation means) I travel from airport to gateway of India and Marine drive and back to Dadar by 5AM

Thanks in anticipation

Well, Blusky, you are married so let's hope you don't go barking up the wrong tree. I guess if you want to meet other women to hang out with, you can go to a local hairdressers or something like that, and ask them where there are group of like minded women, or who knows, she might even invite you on a night out with her friends. Bang! New circle of friends.

Hi Blusky,

Welcome to Mumbai,

where will you be living in Mumbai. affluent locations like bandra, pedder road etc have open spaces / gardens where you can walk your dog and meet other like minded people. also there is a laughter club almost in all localities where the groups meet every morning to end their morning walk with around of laughter therapy.

there are also many organisations/Ngos that will be happy to have an extra pair of hands or any other work that you can do for them.

indians by habit are inquisitive so dont worry in most cases within hours of you moving in the neighbourhood ladies will be around to meet the new interest.

Or do the reverse and knock on the niegbours door and introduce yourself and ask for help with

1. where the market is , who are the good vendors to buy from
2. shopping area
3. hairdresser
etc.

and you may have a new friend.

Do let me know if you need any help in Mumbai

If you are outdoorsy and used to lots of nice green places in Hong Kong for walking you may find it takes a bit to get used to the Mumbai 'green spaces'. there ARE some really nice parks here, but they are small and usually full of people...

Finding a quiet clean green area to go for a long walk can be quite difficult.

Though once you get out of the city there are some great areas for some day walks - through the western ghats (hill areas lining the edge of the Maharashtra state) and there are some ruins of old forts around that are quite magnificent. Also the GREEN out there is gorgeous and a welcome relief from the
city.. makes for nice weekend trips.

Having a dog is a great way to meet folk, but can get a bit tiring never sure who folk are most interested in me or the dog!! Do remember about quarantine in India well after india that is. Not too many dog friendly places here. There are lots of expat activities if thats your cup of tea!!

Dogged Trail

If your dog does not do the trick, try the internet chatrooms.
Good choices cud be online chat communities at indiatimes.com and rediff.com.
