How do I find a job in Mumbai when I currently live in London?
Hi,
I was born and bred in Europe and currently live in London. I want to move to Mumbai but finding it really hard to find a decent paying job there. Does anyone have any advice or know of good recrutiing consultants that I can contact? Also what is considered a good monthly salary? I currently work in Financial Services as a Relationship Manager... Even better does anyone have a job for me??? Many thanks |

just my thoughts
I don't have tons of knowledge in this topic, but I am working in Mumbai by way of London so thought I'd contribute a thought or two. I found my job through a referral from a family friend in London, and I get the sense that, in many cases, it's a lot easier to have a job offer waiting for you in Mumbai than it is to show up and start looking. If you are able to do some networking with the south Asian crowd in London, it might be very useful and I am sure that you will be able to find plenty of people who can put you in touch with friends or family in Mumbai who can either set you up with businesses that they are involved in or refer you to other businesses that they have connections to.
It also may be worth noting that, unless you are placed by some foreign company into their Indian setup, you may have to expect a drop in the salary that you are used to as you'll be drawing your pay in rupees in a business climate that is often very different than what you may be used to in London. Still, as I mentioned before I don't have tons of knowledge outside of my own experience, and I came over here fresh from college (so I didn't have much of a resume or anything to command a job beyond the entry level) so you may find things different for you. In any case, there are plenty of people willing to do all kinds of work already here in India, so you'll need to do something or have some skills (or connection/referral) that make it worth a businesses while to import a worker instead of draw from the large pool that is already available. Hope this helps! |

I went to Mumbai last year with the idea of finding a job, but found it incredibly difficult, and ended up leaving when my visa expired. you should try www.monsterindia.com or www.naukri.com as they have lots of jobs to browse. Alternatively you could try contacting large Indian companies directly. As you work in financial services, you should find it easier to find a job than I did, as most of the advertised position I saw were for financial, insurance or IT jobs (Im in manufacturing, not a big thing in Mumbai).
Also you should expect a drop in pay from what you get in Europe, most job applications require you to fill out your expected pay, so you should be careful about what you put down, as I initially put what I was earning in NZ doing the same job, and got no replies. Later I tried putting a much lower number and got many more responses. I dont know your industry very well, but I wouldnt bank on getting more than about Rs50,000/month at first unless you are going for senior management positions. I eventually got a good job, but it was through a friend of a friend, and I had to go to Chennai to get it. So perhaps making some contacts in Mumbai would be a good idea. |

I work in advertising and after a 6 week stint here last year I decided I would like to come back and work. I have spent endless hours and nights on monster and nakuri, I have done research on the companies I want to work for blah blah.
I have now come to mumbai after contacting these people with a CV, portfolio of my work and covering letter. I have a headhunter who arranged a couple of interviews for me and I have done the rest. In 2 weeks I have had 8 interviews and I have been offered every job but with varying degrees of packages and money. I have invested my own time and money and it will pay off as its targeted to my needs. i cant say it was easy and its not over yet I still have to finalise the deal with one of them. I have invested time and money in this project for one year as I really wanted to do it. The harder you work the luckier you will get. Good luck, am happy to answer any questions. PS; my mum works for ABN Ambro in sydney and they are taking asia by storm |

The OP has not been on line since April, so all your excellent advice could well be falling on deaf ears. It's sad when someone asks a question and cannot be arsed to hang aroung to read the answers.
