Wait a while ... 6 months or so before learning any Indian languages. Learning Hindi/Marathi is not the best time on value proposition.
Random solicit is as good as not asking your local friends/hotel front desk/work people/your favourite embassy. Better than Sweeny Todd will. Doh!

hi
have got the number of one teacher. She is located in Bandra West. Depending on where exactly you are it would take you approx 15-40 mins to reach there. Cost approx 30 - 80 rupees by an auto. I am not keen on putting her number up openly. I think because you are new .. I cant leave you a private mesg. pls leave can you mention your email address / number here. I am online for the next 30 minutes. as soon as i take it down ... you can then remove the details. |

It's true Oni being new you guys can't PM yet. Either of you could open a free disposable webmail address for the purpose, which you could post here. Using your own details is less of a good idea.
Anyone could then contact you there pretending to be the other of course, so you'd still need to find a way to verify who's who.

Hindi will get you going in all of North India & most of South India [except Tamilnadu] whereas, Marathi has limited usage even in Mumbai itself [which is a melting pot cosmopolitan city].
Again, Mumbai is very expensive to learn [anything] as the rentals & living cost are very high. I have not heard of classes in Hindi outside the school or University system. Sreet lingo is quite different everywhere than proper formal school lingo. And Mumbai also has a typical Bollywood Hindi [lotsa underworld slang] which is understood by everyone. Private tutors are usually booked for the entire year and they typically run small batches of five to eight students where each student pays up the entire one-year fee in advance. (Around 50,000 rupees for the whole year with 150 hours of instruction. Multiply that by six students per batch. Multiply that by six batches per year... some manage eight batches.) Tutors would not be interested for three months unless the pay is really good(double?)... and most will not come on a "fee-paid-every-turn" basis. They would want the entire three month payment in advance. Considering the prevailing scenario.... if you are still interested in a Hindi tutor, say so over here (in this thread)... (coz your current post count and number of days on the forum does not allow PMs yet) I will display my email id in my profile for a day or two for receiving email. (it will have blanks or dots between every letter)

Hi Onigirl, Hi everybody,
I reopen that 'learn hindi' topic if nobody minds. Onigirl, how is your hindi improving? Oyar, I might be interested in the adress you gave her, unless I find another option. I did language exchange when I was in China, with a student who was learning French. I helped her in French for one hour then we switched to Mandarin the next hour. I had my method and everything. Of course it was not real teaching and it certainly lacked some pedagogy but it was more than a language exchange in the end. I learnt a lot both on linguistic and cultural aspects. So I'd like to try something similar here in Bombay with some people really really motivated and/or that have already started learning French and want to improve their level and help me with Hindi return. I am a total beginner, sorry.I must precise Andheri area would be definitely better for me. Please, only serious and motivated people contact me... Waiting for you to start... Lina |

Hi fleur
Try & get the contact from Inigirl. The contact that i gave her - was busy & so she gave onigirl another person's details. Let me know if you cant get thru to Onigirl after a few days. I have lost the original contact so it will be a bit of a hassle. If thers no alternative .. i can figure out how to get it. Haha .. i have no particular reason to learn french rt now ... but if u knew Mandarin, Bhasa Malaysia or Tamil .. i would have surely taken u on ur offer ![]() I will let my friend who is fluent in French .. know about it. Have fun in Mumbai |
