Hi erin,

welcome to mumbai. Well it all depends on what you are interested in doing.

Lokhandwala (andheri) has tons of food joints & shopping centers.

Bandra .. which is very close by also has numerous resturants suiting every palate & budget.

Elephenta caves are an hours ride by ferry from the gateway of India. Gateway of India should be an hour from Andheri .. a little more during peak hours.

The museum is supposed to be good (never been there myself yet )
Jehangir art gallery should interest you. It would be in the same area as the museum.

There are numerous places within 2-3 hrs from Mumbai which are great.

If you have the guts - travel by a local train. BUT BE SURE TO HAVE A FRIEND WHO KNOWS WHAT HE / SHE IS DOING. MAKE SURE YOU TRAVEL ONLY BY THE WOMENS COMPARTMENT. It will be a hell of an experience.

As i said .. all depends on what your interests are.

Yes, N.Y. is the best, I'd also Say L.A. is good (for a totally different selection of foodstuffs)and any other major city can offer SOMEthing... but by and large any of those places is an oasis within a desert...I have learned to cook most of my favorite dishes from various cuisines as it is not easy to casually, happily dine in the U.S. (if you like food that is). Is my food snobbery showing yet?:P

Pardon the ignorance... could you please explain the un- "happily dine" part.

And how does it become more "happy" here??

Well I just mean it is too easy to go out to eat and have a really bad experience. really bad. I think based on your previous posts you must derive genuine pleasure from eating - not everyone does- and from tasting, and textures, and well, really the art of foodstuffs... I can't really stress how hard it is in the U.S. to get food that is made from fresh, ripe ingredients, that have flavors that go beyond very basic "sweet", "salty", "buttery". More than anything, everything in the U.S. is super super sweet. Even savory foods. There's corn syrup in everything. Oh ...and there is an ever present "artificial" flavor. Everything tastes somewhat fake... so there is not much joy in eating (for me) in the U.S. (there are a few exceptions of course). It "becomes more happy here" in India for exactly the opposite reasons; the food here is still real, still fresh, people still know how to cook and enjoy food. I will dine happily everyday. Does that make any sense? Or were you just picking on my phrasing? LOL

This seems like it's getting off topic for this thread, so feel free to PM me if you wanna talk more about food... or even meet up for some happy eating...

Events and stuff!

Hi E,

Check this :

Not Just Jazz By The Bay (cuisine and live music) check their event calender - http://www.mars-world.com/restaurants/jbb.html

The Blue Frog (Live music), check their event calender - http://bluefrog.co.in/cms/home.html

You can eat mouth watering Chaat Stuff in Elco Market, 46 Hill Road, Bandra(W).

The Cafe Mondegar (Mondy's) - is right next to Regal, at Colaba. Its a great place to simply hangout and guzzle beer. The walls have Mario Mirandas caricatures and funny stuff painted on the walls - I hope thats still there as it has been a very long time since I visited. It wouldnt be much fun if the walls there are painted plain.. The crowd is good, it actually reminds me of Goa because of the cheerful atmosphere, the crowd which is a mix of happy Indians and delighted tourists ) and they have a juke box to top it all...........

LeoPold is another place in Colaba you can hang out in. Its walking distance from Cafe Mondys. downstairs is where you can eat/drink and talk. Upstairs is nice, but the music is loud as it turns into a discotheque. Food is good here as far as I remember!

E, you can also hang out in "Merlins Bar", Orchid Hotel, Near Domestic Airport. Karaoke nights every night. It is absolutely entertaining and fun being there and singing songs.

Not at all... picking on your phrasing. Far from it, I was genuinely confused. Now that you have cleared the air, agree with you. I just cannot imagine myself eating "fake food" eeeuurr

Yes, Mumbai is heaven for foodies.

Acc to recently changed PM Rules, you cannot PM & be PMed ... yet. But you will reach that stage soon...

All Mumbai meet-ups are eating meetups nowadays. [We had one or two trekking outing meetups... but alas, none recently... people are getting lazy.]

ALL eating is happy here if you go with prior info.

it's sad, sometimes that's all there is! that's one of the main reasons i cook...but a huge part of the problem is that more often than not the raw produce can't compare...i am lucky enough to live in an area where there are very small farms, so in the growing season i can get "real" food...what's really heartbreaking is most people there don't know the difference from genuine lack of experience. for instance, they literally don't know what "fresh" is...

I am terrified India is gonna just be the end of me... maybe a run up gilbert hill every morning...
