Getting a job in the movie industry

Hi there all

Im currently thinking of a bit of a career change. Im currently employed as a Media and communication highcshool teacher in Norway. I have a media related bachelor in adition to my pedagogic education.

I did one semester of my studies in India and completely fell in love with the country. Im also wery fond og the whole Bollywood movie scene and a career within that field would be amazing.

So how do you think my chances are? Is it possible for me to get a job within the movie industry? While i was in India i got the impression from my Indian friends that western european people and western european degrees was highly respected and might help in getting a job.

My Hindi is close to none exsistent, im guessing this might be a problem? Also im thinking about taking a year now and saving up some cash and then just fly over to India and see what kinds of jobs i can get. Good or bad idea?

Thanks for any tips you guys and gals have.

Best regards
-Thomas

How much chance would you have of getting work in the British or American movie industry?

From whatever figure you come up with, make the necessary deductions for not knowing the local language, especially not knowing the language the films are made in, not knowing the local scene and the local people.

Unless you happen to have some enormous and unique technical skill or ability which transcends all this --- in which case, I'd have thought you'd be in the trade already.

My chance of getting in the US or UK industry im guessing is pretty similar. As im no expert of the industry either i dont have a specific opinion on how difficult it is, but i think its plausible.

As for skills, enourmous and unique is very big words. I have quite good skills, i know my way around movies in general and have good technical and creative knowledge.

Language is a barrier offcourse, but thats somthing i can work on. If i decide to go trough with this ill really try hard to improve my Hindi, so id atleast have a basic knowledge when i get over there.

Does anyone have any actual knowledge from within the industry? What background does people have. What kind of skills is in demand? How difficult is it to get the jobs?

Hi,

The low down in the Bollywood scene, is who you know, what your willing to work for and what you are willing to do.

Unless you have a inside connection, or are willing to work for free, don't count landing a job in the industry.

Maybe try a different sector for employment, such as sales, there a good command of the english language and a western accent will get you in the door, from there maybe you will meet new contacts which may help you getting into bollywoood.

Maybe you can arrange locations for new Bollywood movies in Norway? Just a crazy idea, but you are living in a country with such an amazing nature, maybe it will work? If Indians love Switzerland, why not Norway...

Hmm not so bad ideas.

Anyways working for free for a while is an option. If i save up some money ill be able to survive for quite a while on it in India.

I think ill have to dive down in my think tank for a while :-p
