Hi Eden, welcome to IndiaMike.
Great idea heading over to check the place out in advance, so many people dive straight in without really knowing what they're letting themselves in for! So, for those who are not familiar with gated communities, you are looking for a detached house, situated in a group of houses and maybe a park and shop or two, which has a high wall or security fence round the whole group, and security guards on each gate who will only let authorised people in. In my experience of this (limited to Delhi), the wealthy tend to have their own fences and security guards. I bet a gated community would cost an absolute fortune in that area, even if it exists. What is your budget?

well what you have described is the complete ideal haylo and i know they have this type of place in bangalore. however im sure there are not places that cover all this around the area of juhu and im aware its mainly apartment living. it would just be nice to be in some type of place with security and maybe a park so my kids could play. they have loads of freedom here and that is one of main concerns about coming to mumbai so accomodation is paramount. i guess our budget will be about 3500 to 4000 euros but that is just a ball park figure at the moment......have no idea re how much rent is as property sites are so vague and have no pictures so i feel totally in the dark on this one!!

Hi Eden We are in the same stage as you are. Having 4 kids (ages 11 to 4), looking at places to live. I couldn''t find a decent website either with photos. We are looking around Worli (Banda, Juhu even) where my husband will be working. I am not happy about ending up in an appartment building at all and I got from reading on different forums that it is basically impossible to find a house even in a compound. So we are not sure about it. And the rent, for a 4 to 5 bedroom place you end paying 6000 to 8000 EUR, at least that is what I got from the info on the websites again. Please let me know you are findings and ideas. Good luck.

I am looking at the ASB. Have contacted them before they closed in June. Unfortunately we won't be moving before the new school yera starts since I couldn't get everything organized before 12 August when they start again. Here school finishes only coming Friday so there was not much time left. So we are aiming now for December which gives us more time to arrange everything properly. What is your timing?

well i think we would look to move around feb but im not sure how the schools fare with starting mid term etc so all that would need to be decided. we are planning a trip over there soon so i guess we will make final decisions then. it will be a hard wrench to move from luxembourg and im still very very unsure about it all. the housing thing being my main issue at the moment!!! i see you are in prague, is that where you r from?? we are from uk been here 7 years so used to the expat thing but this is a very different move!!!!!

I don't know actual property prices in that particular area, but going by my knowledge of Delhi, Western quality housing in India is shockingly expensive. I would not be at all surprised if that budget only got you a good apartment, rather than a detached property in a gated community.

Gated communities are virtually unknown in Mumbai, I don't know of any, certainly not in Juhu. In Powai there is a small cluster of row houses, but these are small, only 3 bedrooms I think. And this is also not a gated community, it's just part of the Hiranandani complex. The prices however are similar to apartments of the same size.
I think your best bet would be trying to find an apartment in a nice building with private garden/playground/pool, they do exist in Juhu and Bandra, and can be very nice. But I'm not sure your budget will be enough for this. Where will your husband we working? If it's not in Juhu, you have the option of living somewhere else, and choose a different school. But I'm not sure you will find something better there, it just gives you more options. |

thanks hemmie thats great info, i guessed there would not be a gated community as such but the idea of an appartment with pool etc sounds perfect we will keep on looking. i think you are right re the budget, think we will need to double that and some!! im astounded at the prices, i was basing it on what we pay here and i thought lux was expensive, however im sure it will be fine as we are hoping the company will also realise that thats what you need to pay...or we arent coming LOL!!!!

I know from Ecole Mondiale that they charge the full year even though you start half way through the year. We wanted to enroll our daughter in the nursery upon arrival in November but we decided against it as they billed full price. We enrolled her in a different nursery and she will now start at the Ecole in the new schoolyear in August. We did not try to negotiate but maybe that's worth a shot.
I know from a friend that ASB charged half year for 2 months school. |

hi
there are very few gated community in Juhu and they are terribly expensive in terms of facilities offered Powai is a better option where there are many public gardens, play areas etc for the kids you can chek out some options there Ram |
