More so if you are a foreigner and she is Indian.

Mumbai housing societies sometimes will either complain to you, or more likely, to the landlord, about this. Have seen it happen... me being the landlord

I plan on doing a bit of entertaining in my flat. I have an absolutely enormous terrace that comes with the place. its bigger than most rooftops. What is the etiquette on throwing parties and noise?

Trintrin, the etiquette is the same as everywhere, in middle class and upwards apartments, music-noise or party-people noise to a level where it disturbs neighbours is supposed to be unseemly.

In reality, unless there is a lot of noise, people will generally not complain till late evening, maybe 10 or 11 pm.

Of course there are always more churlish people who will be the exception; all depends on the kind of neighbours you have.

Here in Hyderabad, in the days we used to have noisy parties, I used to invite my neighbours too. Thats one solution.

Where I'm from you send an invitation attached to a bottle of wine.

So when am I getting an invitation?

Not in India, or at least the kind of parties I am used to going to, you don't. The wine may end up costing you more than the party.

Regarding nosy neighbours,

How pathetic! Get a life people!

So, if she comes over at an early hour, say 5PM, and doesn't leave until noon the next day, how can they prove she slept in my room? There aren't security cameras and there is no security guard; I'll just say she left by a decent hour and came back the next morning.

I can't lose my deposit over something like this, can I?

No, you can't lose your deposit, but in extreme cases of the Society's discontent, they can ask the landlord to get you to leave.

There usually is something in the fine print of the lease which will hint at a tenant's (yours) 'good behaviour' or something which can be later construed to cover such eventualities.

They don't have to prove anything. They just have to believe it is true.

Not saying it will happen, but it can.

If you want to lead a happy and peaceful time respect the values of your neighbours. Do things quietly no late parties no flaunting yoursleves in public with affection . societies here have a lot of power and you do not need to get on the wrong side off them. Also dont treat the nieghbours as if they are daft if someone comes in the afternoon and leaves next day then they are right to assume she has stayed over. They will think bad of her too so do not put her in that position too.

This is a challanging city but follow the rules and things will be ok!!

I party rarely, and it certainly won't be in my Santa Cruz flat. I don't listen to loud music and I don't watch TV. I spend the vast majority of my time here at work and in South Bombay. Smokin herb for 6 years in America taught me how to do things discreetly.

I would never flaunt it in anyone's face- very unlike me.

It's all good, I'm receiving more than enough resistance from members of her own family- I don't expect neighbours to understand our partnership!

I'm just hoping to keep it low-key and friendly.

wow, this info is both scary and useful

hey everyone...

ok, just landed in bombay tonight, here in colaba...looking for a place for me alone for about 12 months. i'm doing my PhD research on bt cotton here in maharashtra (in vidarbha, but i want to base myself out of here as i will still freelance and need to be close to an airport...and anyway bombay is fun)...no company to help me, but luckily have some friends (and friends of friends) living here. so i'm hoping for the best...i want to live in colaba and can do INR 20K a month, and i could do a PG as long as it had a seperate entrance. hmm. i'd also consider sharing a flat if the people were cool. so on that note, more about me here and here.

drop a line if you wanna meet...

So I've been in my flat for 5 days now. Everything seemed to be going wonderfully, until I discovered red bites all over my arms and legs. They've multiplied twice over from Saturday night to Monday morning. I searched under the mattress with a flashlight, and yep, dead bedbugs. Unbelievable. I bought new linen, pillows, etc. this weekend, and now I fear that it is all contaminated. I told my owner this morning, and he said he'd spray cockroach repellant. What will this do? Will it be effective?

Good lord, the drama never ends.

Cocokroach repellent will not do the job.

Use "KHATNIL" - insectiside for Bedbugs. should be available at most supermarkets an grocery store. Spray it on the bed frame bedside table wardrode basically on any wodden furniture in your flat.

also Wash all your bed linen and dry them in the sun. the heat will drive the bed bugs away.

For pillows and mattresses take them up to the terrace of your building and leave them in the sun for the entire afternoon.

that should rid you of bed bugs.

Best of luck
