Thans Pintz. Yeah, you're right! Actually the guy sent me some pics of the flat and... it's not a mistery it's very very small. You think that price is to high for a micro-flat? Anyway i'll say the owner to wait till i'll be there. I wish you all the best for your search. See you in Mumbay...!!!!

Just to add to the already amazing amount of information on this site-
I've been searching and searching for a 1BHK or studio apartment in and around the Mahim area. This search has gone as far north as Andheri and as far South as Colaba. I've met with dozens of brokers and seen countless flats. Put simply, the housing market in Bombay is ridiculous. Until my company formally hired me and used their own resources, I literally had no chance of finding a suitable flat. Everyone showed me crappy PG's and rundown buildings, all while charging up to 25,000-30,000 a month! No matter how many times I told the brokers that I was not interested in a PG, I inevitably ended up looking at them while carrying on uncomfortable conversations with the owners. I love India, but I DO NOT want to live with an Indian family. I'm not used to such intimacy!! Anyhow, my company thankfully took me to see about 7 places in 3 days, and managed to effectively bargain down prices to reasonable rates. Early, when searching independently, I could not get a 1BHK in Mahim area for less than 20,000. This included the worst building, with terrible water supply, shoddy security, etc. Now, I have a lovely 1BHK in Dadar (W) by Shivaji park for 18,000 a month, and though small, it is fully furnished and has everything I need! It's absolutely perfect for me, and I'm thrilled to finally be ending this ridiculous real estate saga. I'm finalizing the deal today, so keep your fingers crossed!

As a matter of fact, most people in Mumbai DO live on the street for the same reasons as you have just stated.... and some in slums [ghettos] which are only slightly better than streets ... ![]() |

In a cruel, but expected, twist of fate- my flat is gone!
The owner found someone willing to pay 25,000 for what I was about to pay 18,000...and the process begins anew. How devastating. Now today I've seen three flats, all overlooking slums and two without ACs, all around the 15-18 range... I'm so pissed. TrinTrin...for a 23 year old fresh out of college you certainly have quite a bit of capital at your disposal. I know well-to-do families that wouldn't pay that much for a flat. Are you working for the Russian mob? |

Just to update everyone:
I just went and saw two more flats. Both featured dead cockroaches on the floor and in the sink. The owner laughed at me when I expressed my concern over this point, telling me that it is a good sign to see them dead. ![]() Is it possible to find a small, studio-apartment in this freaking city?? I don't want a spacious 1BHK and I don't want a PG. I want something in the middle. I'm so annoyed and frustrated right now with this housing search. I was elated yesterday, only to have everything come crashing back to earth today. ![]() |

The are some people on Couchsurfing mumbai for travellers who have found similar accommodation. Would they be able to help you . I don't know .But they sure did get accommodation after searching a lot in the city.

Cost of stay versus cost of commute have to be balanced. If I were to spend heavily on taxi or car to commute everyday, I'd rather add that sum to the rent and stay next door to my work place. Saves a lot of time, if not money. |

Update on the Housing situation-
Today I move into my flat after work. I finally settled for a 1BHK in Santa Cruz (W) for 18,000 a month. My company is paying the 100,000 deposit. Anyhow, it's not as nice as the flat I had chosen earlier, but it's certainly nicer than the ones I've seen recently. It's about 550 square feet, so its relatively spacious for Bombay housing. They initially wanted 22,000! The flat next to mine has been unoccupied for months while the owner is in Dubai, I hope the vacant flat doesn't attract all sorts of nasties (roaches, etc). It's very close to SV road, and about 10 kilometers from my office in Mahim. The lane itself is shaded and features low-level buildings, an aspect I definitely like. I have to meet the Housing society people tomorrow, and I'm hoping that will go well. I'm not telling them that I have an Indian girlfriend, but I want to bring her to the flat occassionaly. Are neigbours really so nosy that they'll keep tabs of who goes in and out of my flat and who stays the night? I'm hoping to obtain an AC bus pass, as I won't be eligible for a driver for quite some time. I'm going to try and travel to work early in the morning and leave early in the evening in order to avoid peak traffic hours. I don't want a 10KM journey to take an hour. It's been a twisted and convoluted road to this point. I hope everything is smooth sailing from here....but I highly doubt it! ![]() |

More so if you are a foreigner and she is Indian. Mumbai housing societies sometimes will either complain to you, or more likely, to the landlord, about this. Have seen it happen... me being the landlord ![]()
