Expats in Navi Mumbai

Hello,

At the moment my husband and his boss are looking into the possibility of opening a new office in Mumbai. If all goes well, we might be moving there with our 1 year old son within 6 months.

No exact location has been set for the office yet, but for several reasons Navi Mumbai is preferred. To minimize commuting time for my husband, we would like to live near the office, so that would also mean Navi Mumbai. Since I won't be working there and my son will probably not go to any daycare or preschool for a while, I feel it might be better to be near other expats for our social contacts. However, I get the idea most expats live in Mumbai. Does anyone know whether there are also expat families living in Navi Mumbai, and if so, in which area do most live?

Another issue is schools, since we will probably be staying in Mumbai for at least 3 years, our son will probably start school there at some point. If I'm correct, the international schools are all located in Mumbai. Where do expat children living in Navi Mumbai attend school? Is it possible to travel into Mumbai every day, or do they attend an Indian school in Navi Mumbai?

As you can see, still many questions before we make a final decision, and I hope someone can help me.
Thanks!

Welcome to IM!

No idea where the expats live in Navi Mumbai but have seen quite a few out there when i used to stay there. But shortly someone here will direct u their exact place of colonisation.

And forget about ur son attending school in Mumbai if you are staying at Navi Mumbai....its hell lot of pain in traveling even if there is a school bus service. Not worth it. But hey I rememer seeing some advt about an International School somewhere near Khargar or Nerul. That wud be the best choice for that young dutch man to start his schooling.

Hi, I am no expat, live in Navi Mumbai. You may want to check out Delhi Public School in Nerul and Ryan International. DPS offers CBSE and Ryan offers ICSE.
Anyway according to your post your son is very young, so your probably need more info. about preschools, I am sure there are quite a few good private ones.

Hi,

Welcome to Indiamike & Navi Mumbai!

The best option for housing will be at NRI Colony on Palm Beach Road. As Amyl have mentioned there are numerous reputed schools (few International ones too)in Nerul, Kharghar.

Hope this helps

Navi mumbai does not have a school that would meet the international standards that I would imagine you would want. in mumbai at the moment there are 4 schools German French American and ecole mondiale that would do.
German and French are in South Mumbai, American in Bandra and Ecole in Juhu. German follows the UK system.

If you want to be around other expats with little ones living in Bandra or Powai would be good. The commute may be a bit long but it depends where in Navi Mumbai you will be as Powai near the eastern express and you can nibp over to Navi Mumbai

Thanks for replies!

Thanks for your replies. At the moment the plan is that the new office will be located in either Navi Mumbai (Vashi probably), or Powai. From what I've read here, Powai might be nicer for us, but we will wait and see.

The (pre-)school our son will be attending in a couple of years does not have to be a top school yet (but of course it should have a reasonable standard), since we will probably be leaving India again when he is still young, but I would prefer for him to attend a school where there are at least a few foreign kids, so that he does not stand out too much with his blond hair and blue eyes.

Anyway, the final decision will be made in the next month, so we'll have to wait, but at least I have some idea of the areas now.

Navi mumbai

Powai will have lots of expats and quite a few with young children so will be a good place for the early years child.
there is a small Dutch communnity in mumbai so you will be able to have others to chat to about schooling if you are here long enough

All the best
