Climbing in/around Mumbai
Hi,
I know it's hot and it's monsoon season but does anyone have any info/topo's etc to climbing near Mumbai? I'm out here for at least a couple of months so if anyone's around and can give me the tour or has any info that'd be great! I've only brought shoes and a chalk bag in the vain hope of finding some bouldering/ a wall. (I don't climb that hard F6b\c, Font 7a on a good day) |

Hi,
Welcome to Indiamike! Unfortunately, the season for outdoor climbing has ended and not expected to start before late September/October. Checkout the Girivihar website www.girivihar.org . You can give buzz to Bong or Gaurang for climbing in indoor walls. If you have any difficulty in getting through pm me. Cheers Anindya

Cheers for the info. I'm staying out in Andheri and don't finish work till 6:30 at the earliest so it'd be a bit difficult to get across to the wall. Looks like I'll have to go without and stick to training in the gym.
Thanks again. |

You can ask info about other wall climbing people [to meet up] and indoor walls at http://www.aviindustries.com.
Most of them buy some of their stuff here.... its an informal place to gather info. . . .

Climbing in Mumbai is mostly done at
Kanheri Caves,Borivali Mumbra Rocks, Mumbra Prasik Hills, CBD Belapur Manori Rocks, Manori Island There are very few bolted routes and some of the routes are flaky. However you will rarely find any multi-pitch routes and majority of the routes will be under 20-25 mts. The highest grade, as per my knowledge will be 7b. All of the above places also offer lot of opportunities for bouldering up to the grades of V8 |

These guys do some weekend outings and trekking guides and so on methinks http://www.outlooktraveller.com/ . I've had trouble navigating their site though, I see now it's just had an overhaul. Never used them, looks like a promising series however. See what you make of it.

As for guides, none in the formal sense. But guys are really friendly and willing to show you around. Seems like quite a few on this forum,
also try this guy: kaivalya varma [kaivalyavarma@yahoo.com] |

However, some of the websites like rockclimibing.com has mention of few routes. Harish Kapadia's book 'Trek the Sahyadris' has mention of routes in Kanheri and Mumbra plus pinnacles in western ghats. I think it would be a good idea to visit any of the climbing sites during the seasion, there will people climbing around and one can tag along. |

The book "The Sahyadri Companion" lists more than 100 rock climbs, including some difficult ones. Only book of its kind for rock climbing listings.... even tho it covers trekking for the major part. It was available with Lagoo Bros jewellers at Dadar, as the owner is associated with Girivihar. [one of the clubs in the above thread list.] |
