Area's in eastern Mumbai
Hi All,
I'm still in the process of sorting out contract details (Everything is as slow as expected) but finally found out where I'll be based. The office will be in Mahape. I'm into city living and going to bars, eating out a few nights a week is a must plus like to have something to do at the weekends. Are there any nice area's in the east side of Mumbai that would be within a hour or so commute of Mahape or is the traffic that bad that I am just kidding myself. Are most of the modern appts. in the burbs or are there modern blocks/developments in the city. thanks in advance for all your replys |

Mahape is in New Bombay (Navi Mumbai). For many practical purposes, it is a distant suburb of Mumbai.
You will find bars and resteraunts right across the city, but Vashi may be the closest option for you.. Most 'downtown' or more upmarket bars and resteraunts, however, will be an hour and a half to three hours drive away, depending on traffic.

Yep, but somehow I get the impression (maybe mistaken) that the OP is looking for a 'downtown' kind of experience, which is probably parts of South Mumbai/closer Suburbs more than Vashi

Right,
but as you said, OP will have to deal with traffic/transportation issues, which only gets worse in Mumbai |

Dunno if he will be living in New Bombay, or only working there.
If budget permits, maybe an idea to live around, say, Bandra and work at Mahape, usually travelling against the traffic. All depends on the priorities, I guess. Everything else being equal, I would live as close as possible to my place of work in his place. |

Thanks for the responses.
I've always been a fan of living close to work but don't mind commuting and would prefer to spend an hour each way to work and have the ability of going out when I get home rather than have to spend an hour to get somewhere to go out. Bandra does seem a little far though. |

Many of the people I work with are fans of Navi Mumbai because it's well organised and the traffic moves (compared to the 'old Mumbai').
But I don't feel it has the services for an ex-pat yet. You may want to look at Powai? It's 30 minutes from Navi Mumbai and has a bit more life. Bandra is even better and I'd recommend Pali Hill .... but it will be at least a one hour commute. I live on the West Side in an area with good restaurants and sea views - but work in Navi Mumbai. The commute is punishing .... can easily be two hours each way - but I also travel to the domestic airport on some days - and that's only 15 minutes away from home. If you plan to commute by train (only recommended if play Rugby) then living in the South (Downtown) areas is another option. Marine Drive, Nariman Point, Cuffe Parade, Collaba - all good, but expensive accommodation. When you first see Mumbai - it will all look the same ... but the differences in the areas are quite marked |

Powai is the place then, it does have some night spots else good eating joints, i feel this would be the ideal bet for you. Travel time approx 30min. Bandra will be more and will be worse once the Sion Flyover work starts post rains as estimated

Thanks, just the type of info I'm looking for. Would Bandra be 1.5 hours or around the hour mark during the rush hours?

Bandra would take a minimum of an hour ... possibly 2 on a bad day.
Suggest you look at Powai first (Hirandandani area), then Bandra, Juhu etc .... and see if you think Bandra/Juhu is worth the extra hour a day in travel time. Also worth looking at Andheri (Malls, bars, cafe, more malls) .... around 45 min travel time. |
