Accommodation in Mumbai

Hiya,
I'm an Australian girl moving to Mumbai in a few months. My partner's work (an Indian company) has offered to provide accomm in addition to his salary, and I'm just wondering what we can expect and maybe should argue for. I'm recovering from CFS so will need to spend a fair amount of time pottering indoors, so comfortable accomm will be really important.

Here's a few questions if anyone's got a spare moment to answer them...
1. Can we expect air conditioning, a kitchen, furniture, phone/internet connection, several rooms...?
2. Is Bandra a good expat area? Any other suggestions?
3. Are most expat appartments swanky modern things that look like hotel rooms? Id like soomething comfortable, but not sterile. Maybe a rennovated older building...

Any tips or helpful website suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!

Kato,

Welcome to mumbai,
Bandra is a good area to live in, especially Pali Hill. another expat area would be malabar hill, peddar road. another option is the executive apartments like the taj wellingdon.

Can we expect air conditioning, a kitchen, furniture, phone/internet connection, several rooms...? - YEs all pf this is possible, it depends on what the company is willing to pay.

Enjoy your stay

Thumbs up Terribly expensive

For those who do not know Mumbai, the very expensive accomodation gives them a shock.

Pedder Road and Bandra stated above are both very upmarket locations, where one might be paying something like 80,000 to 150,000 rupees per month for a decent two or three bed apartment..... apart from a fat deposit of 30 months' rent.

What's the budget that the employer will sanction?? This is the lakh rupee question.

Mumbai Apts for short term

Look up www.expatriates.com; go to "Mumbai" region and click on "short term rentals". This will provide you with an idea of what the apt. rents are in different parts of Mumbai. Ascertain from your company the terms for the rental.
Commuting in this city is time consuming and uncomfortable in buses and local trains during peak hours. Suggest try to be closer to your place of work. Illustratively it will take you over an hour to reach South Mumbai (say Flora Fountain) from Bandra during Peak traffic hours.

accomodation in mumbai

Hi

I am a french student and I do a training period in the French embassy in Mumbai. So I am looking for an accomodation from the beginning of october to the end of december of this year. It's the first time I go to India and I'd like to know if you could give me a website or an address for accomodations. In fact I'd like to find an appartment with co-tenants.
Moreover, I wanted to know what's the best place to live in mumbai when you are a student.
thanks for your help !

Thumbs up Accommodation i Mumbai

The French Consulate in Mumbai is at Nariman Point. It would be best for you to find "Paying Guest" accommdation at Colabe or Chuchgate. The Consulate can help you or visit site www.expatriates.com. If you need help, please do not hesitate to contact me on my personal email alpha_usp@yahoo.co.in

Hi Guillaume, I guess we will work together at the Consulate Will you be on the Chancelry or on the Trade commission part? As for accommodation, things do not come cheap in Mumbai, nor easily as far as flats are concerned. For this kind of length, I would suggest a Paying Guest scheme as well, or "colocation" (I have heard a number of other interns and VIA are coming up at the Trade Commission in the months to come, so you may want to liase with the consulate to find out more).
Good luck!

Tom

accomodation Bombay

Salut tom_fr, guillaume,

I am considering a job with a company located at Nariman point, since you guys both work there maybe you can help:

Where did you find reasonably priced apts/paying guest accomodation, and how is your commute?

Thanks for your feedback.

i'm working in Nariman Point too.
spent 3 mths looking for an apartment until i finally settled on one. it all depends on your expectations and budget.

for starters, the areas in south mumbai that are within 30mins commute of Nariman Point would include Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Worli, Peddar Road, Malabar Hills, Altamount Rd, Marine Drive, Breach Candy etc. most of the apartments (with the exception of the new developments) are old buildings (min 10-20yrs old) though the locals argue that some of these are considered grade A buildings. i was looking for a relatively new 3 bedroom type of apartment, and the typical rentals in these areas are in the 200k+ rupee per month range. even so, i didn't find one to my liking since i prefer new buildings (5yrs old or less).

so i ended up expanding my search to Bandra, which is about 45mins commute to Nariman Point in good traffic, and anywhere up to 2hrs in peak hours. to me, it's a compromise. longer commute but i found much nicer and newer apartments in Bandra, plus the area is nicer with good shopping, restaurants and clubs. so eventually i settled on a new 3 bedrm 12th floor unit in Bandra.

if u need help with apts, i can recommend a couple of decent brokers who can give you a list of options based on your requirements and budget. most important thing is to take your time to look for the right apartment, and not rush into it.

Actually my budget will be significantly smaller than that, PG up to Rs. 10,000 . I absolutely want to avoid a long commute, so Worli is as far north as I would go. I have already arranged to see several rooms at Nariman Point/Colaba through a broker, I was hoping maybe an IMer could refer me to someone offering a PG accommodation directly - which would hopefully get me a good landlord and help me avoid the brokerage fee. It doesnt have to be a new building, as long as its decent and I'm comfortable with the people - thats most important.

Burnz, thanks for your advice and offer, I think I'll try the brokers I'm already in touch with, and will get back to you if they don't deliver.

Once I'm settled I'll definitely show up at an IM meeting and look forward to catching up with you and other IMers in person!

no problem.. key thing is, you can never go wrong with using a few brokers simultaneously.. my experience is that different brokers can quote u different prices for the same apartment!

i'd suggest that you focus your search to marine drive, colaba, churchgate and cuffe parade areas.. it's a bit*h to commute from anywhere further by public transport..

if u need any help, juz drop me a PM.. mumbai can be quite a challenge for expats like us to figure out

take care, and see u in mumbai soon

looking for accomodation in Mumbay...

Hy all! I red some posting on this thread and i got the idea in Mumbay is very expensive to rent a flat. Anyway i will move there on Febbruary '07, but of course i need to find an accomodation. I'm italian and i'll work for an italian company, but i have to pay for the rent. Considering the prices i saw on some posts for the, say "expats living area", i'll be happy to have infos on new develloping areas around Mumbay centre.
I won't often stay home since i'll have to travel for my job, so a little mini- apartment with one bedroom and kitchen would be enough, but it would be better if newly built, with A/C and possibility of a fast Internet connection (very important for my job). Please include costs if you have an idea (also in the case you know about something similar as criteria. For example in a central area).
If you know of something matching this requirements or someone to adress me to, let me know
My e-mail is: maxfrancesconi@yahoo.it
Ciao! Max
