Moving to Kolkata

Hello,
I am moving to Kolkata in January to work in an non-profit organisation. I am preparing my trip and I have lots of questions since it will be my first time in India (how exciting! ). What are the essential things to bring health-wise? I will be living just outside the city. Do I need to bring things like mosquito net etc...? How easy is it to get a prepaid sim card? For those who also moved there, what did you find very useful to bring from home? Sorry, these questions might seem naive for the people who know this destination well...
Thanks for your help!

Thumbs up Welcome to Indiamike

And Bienvenue à Kolkata
Weather during January is very pleasant in Kolkata and this is the time for fairs and festivals like Book fair, Handicrafts fair and so on. So you will enjoy your staying.
Are you going to arrange your own accommodation or the organization will provide the same? If it is their responsibility I do not thing you need to worry about mosq net or something. And in worst case you can always purchase one here in Kolkata. SIM card issue will be solved in no time if you can produce all the required documents (like copy of Passport / proof of address etc) to any dealer of your locality.
May be someone who has come from a different place can suggest regarding essential things more specifically but if you need some local info plz post here and we’ll definitely try to provide the info.

Thank you!

Thank you Somnath for your kind answer. I will get an accomodation from the organisation so you are right, they will probably take care of things. I am glad to hear that it is simple to get a sim card as well. I am sure I'll have more questions before moving to Kolkata, thank you for offering your advices!
Best,

Plz Click here....
and search for the place – Pailan. Some zoom in and zoom out will give you some clear idea about its location. There are some marked areas at Pailan like Pailan Engg & Mngmnt College, Pailan Park, Bus stop etc.

It is not very close to the heart of the city. Very calm and quiet place but coming up very fast. It is approx 20 KM (if I am not wrong) from Raj Bhawan (the milepost of Kolkata sows ‘0’). You need to avail bus service to comedown to the city else the nearest Metro Station is Tollygaunj (still you need to travel by bus to be there).

Lime80, Come soon, the weather is very pleasant in Calcutta . Just perfect to explore the city.

Thank you!
I didn't know Pailan would be that far from Kolkata. How long do you think it would take by bus? I will be commuting to Kolkata city centre everyday for work, so hopefully I will not be too isolated in the suburb
I saw that the IM people were organising some meet up things in Kolkata. Do you know if there will be something like that in January?
Anyways, thanks again!
5 weeks to go!

Thumbs up Hi

Lime,
Don’t worry the road connecting to Pailan is not congested just everywhere but well, I don’t think the traffic will be as smooth as you generally experience. And the time depends on the exact location, I mean if you can tell us the name of the place (Kolkata city centre) that would be more specific. But let me assume that you mean to say Esplanade area and then the approx journey time by bus 1.5 hrs. (Sorry this is not the first hand info, one of my colleague told me about the timing).
IM meetup in Kolkata !!!! huh…. We have (once upon a time) experienced some lovely meetups in Kolkata but we have some bitter experience too. Generally Indiaguide and me do not miss any meet (if we are in Kolkata) and last couple of time it was a meet of these two old members only.
He he he …… we need just an excuse to meet that’s all, Lime. If you like to meet just announce here, lets see if the new batch of Kolkata IM can join us. And venue / place will be decided later (you need some time to settle down here).

What do you think guys?

Hi!
Thanks a lot! I won't be working in Salt Lake city and by city centre I meant Kolkata city centre. I didn't know before I checked now what Salt Lake city was, so I read a little bit about it Thanks, I've learn something!
I don't know if I will have to go to city centre everyday but if I do, I will get to see more of the city so I am happy!
Can't wait to be there
Thanks again,
Cheers
