Moving to Kolkata, Sept 05
Hi all,
I'm moving to Kolkata in a little over a month, and just wanted to get some info/thoughts from people. I've been to india before, and spent a couple of days in Kolkata, but I'm going to be working (and I think living) in Salt lake City which I believe is a few miles out of the city centre... I was wondering if anyone has any experience of what this place is like?? Specifically night-life and amenities, but also just a general feel of how easy is it to travel into the centre of Kolkata, whether I'd need to/want to much? Many thanks |

Hi matt,
well saltlec is not that far from the main cal city would be abt 20 /25 mins drive ,saltlec is developed u get almost everything in saltlec, it has a big shopping arcade called CITY CENTER ,which also houses 4 movie halls(inox), besides that KFC,pizza hut , a few coffee shops and many shops, besides this you have some good hotels close by the HYATT and 10 mins drive the ITC hotel. Nite life in saltlec is not so much ,more like kinda dead, most of the places are opened till around 10 ,except for the movie hall in the shopping arcade is opened till 1.00am. Saltlec if you are staying in individual house i wouldnt recommend not that safe ,would suggest if you have the option stay in an apartment complex. Nite life in calcutta city is good, you have a lot of options and places to go to, on days like wed ,fri and sat ,most of this place are opened till 5 am. best of luck with ur stay in calcutta |

Hi Matt,
Welcome to IndiaMike and Welcome to Calcutta. You will get a mixed reaction for Salt Lake. My office is situated right there (Sector - V) and the communication is OK here. Bur Rocky is right, not very convenient during late night. Safety, amenities all are depending on where at Salt Lake? Communication between Salt Lake and airport is better than the heart of Kolkata. By the way, is your working place situated at Salt Lake or you are selecting the area for accommodation only? You will enjoy your stay in Kolkata, Matt. Welcome once again. Cheers, Somnath |

Thanks guys,
I'm going to be working in Sector II of Salt Lake, and will be staying at either the Hyatt or the ITC. During the week I'd just envisage staying locally, whether at the hotel or going to the cinema etc., but like the idea of getting out to the city centre at the weekend.. Am really starting to look forward to it now! Cheers Matt |
