Moving to Calcutta
I am hoping some of the members of the forum can give me a brief insight to Calcutta.
I have been offered a position there and am considering the move. My concerns are education for two children 8 and 6 Recreation for kids and family What we can expect in terms of living arrangements Health facilities Food/cooking/shopping Transport Basically an honest appraisal of living conditions and what a family from Australia can expect. Any feedback would be much appreciated as we endeavour to make this fairly momentous decision! |

I assume you have been offered a very well paid job and your place of work is some where near Salt Lake.
Living arrangement can be quite comfortable and even luxurious. Plenty of markets and departmental stores so shopping is not an issue at all. Easy to find domestic helps, maids and cooks and very affordable too. World class health facilities in terms of hospitals and nursing homes are available should you need them. Can't comment on transportation since you have not mentioned place of work and where you want to stay. English medium schools are plenty and there are some real good ones. Admission might be a problem tho. Recreation for the kids and family depends on where you will be living. Last edited by jyotirmoy : Dec 22nd, 2007 at 16:11. Reason: spelling |

There are a couple of recent threads about moving to Kolkata, so you might search for them. If I recall correctly, there are discussions of where to live and housing costs.

There are a couple of people from the US who have moved to Kolkata and write blogs that I have bookmarked (for some reason they have not written lately):
1. Colleen at http://yankeemominkolkata.blogspot.co m/ 2. Jeanne at http://american-in-calcutta.blogspot.com/ Please check them out and see how you can contact them to learn more about their experiences. Cheers Nattusbs |
