Traveling W/ Children & Documents Needed

I am trying to decide what all documents I am going to bring for my children. Passports of course but should I bring their birth certificates & social security cards? Is there some other documents that i am not thinking of? We will be leaving the U.S. in a couple of weeks so I am now starting to get nervous that I will forget something important.

Thanks Peregrine

For tourism only, probably nothing else necessary.

We will be living in Hyderabad for the next 3 to 5 yrs. So then would you recommend leaving Social security cards and birth certificates with family in the states.

What about taking certified copies with you and leaving the original certificates in the States?

Take your international vaccination pass with you! At least a copy.

It's a yellow booklet with a record of the vaccinations you've taken; a handy record to have with you.

Make photocopies of all your documents and carry them in your pack, or stash them online -- I believe Yahoo has some sort of online "wallet" where you can upload copies of documents. That way, if your passport is lost or stolen or destroyed, you have a copy of it to present to the consulate. Same with birth certificates.

I can't think of any need for a Social Security card in India, or to return to the US...but will probably have a copy of it anyway.

Oh, and be sure to note the numbers and expiration dates of all your credit cards, and the toll-free number to call if they are lost.

This booklet is from the WHO, so it looks almost the same all over the world and can be recognized as an official document. We get it automatically when we get vaccinations. It should be available in all countries.

Thank you. I have decided to make on line copys of everything and also get a raised seal copy of kids birth certificate to take with us. I am also going to leave a list of all of our passport numbers with a family member.

Thanks Again

All of that is not at all a bad idea, although it is more appropriate for travellers and tourists than for residents. The chance of loosing something is very much less when you not carrying it around so much.

A simple one you can add is to carry copies as well --- but not in the same bag!
