Telugu language book/cd?

Hiya folks. Got to Hyderabad two days ago. I'm looking for a couple things and could use some advice. I need a good Telugu language book -- not a phrase book but and actual beginner's book, hopefully with companion CD and script instruction as well. On a similar note, I miss my books in general and need to stock up. Any good bookstores around the Jubilee/Banjara Hills area? I'm temporarily staying in the Film Nagar complex and haven't seen anything close by.

Thanks much.

Hello Billy...So, 8 months down the line, have you made any progress with the Telugu language?...I know it's not very easy if you're a non-telugu person [I've lived in Hyderabad for quite a few years but never could pick it up...thankfully, Urdu, Hindi and English work just fine in the city]...I was looking around for some info on captioning companies in Hyderabad and came upon a post by you somewhere...What company do you work with?...Does it also deal with Telugu and local Indian languages?

Captioning is one small department, actually. We do outsourced work from the states but haven't had much lately. The only Telugu language stuff we do is for the films and shows our company produces, though.

Sadly, my Telugu is non-existent. I'd love to learn, but simply haven't a free moment in the day to learn a new language. It's quite frustrating, actually, not being able to speak with people when I need to communicate.

When you've had enough posts and can P.M., shoot me a message and we'll talk caption editing.

Yes, I can imagine...It's not easy to learn a totally alien language...I'm a south Indian who doesn't speak any of the 4 main languages [Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil], so face quite a bit of - you can't be south Indian then - from many people...Though Hyderabad is not as unmanageable as, say - Chennai or Kerala...I've lived a major chunk in Bangalore and often faced this difficulty while communicating with local patients [I'm a dentist]...

You're a dentist!? I have the worst teeth in Hyderabad. What a coincidence.

Bad teeth?? Well, you're good for my ilk then Dentists depend on dental problems for their livelihood Let me know if you still haven't found yourself a good dentist. I'll give you details of a good doc. Teeth troubles shouldn't be ignored too much. I learnt it the hard way. Got two root canals recently and I'm a dentist

Okay, this is timely -- I do have horrible teeth and after having had a tooth ache for a week but not a moment to go to the dentist (or the money), I tried to pull my own tooth out a couple days ago. I smashed when I was pulling it out and it left a shard that is too small to grab onto. Sheesh. Capt Mahajan says he knows a good dentist. I have to make sure I find one who understands I'm not a rich foreigner but, rather, a foreign guy making an Indian salary. This leaves out the dentists in my neighborhood. <--me not smiling for a while.

What?? You actually pulled out your own tooth?? You shouldn't have. Can lead to complications. You should've mentioned earlier. Maybe you just needed a dose of antibiotics and an analgesic before a trip to the dentist. You could try Dr. Ratnesh Saxena on 9849039387. He has two clinics, one in Old City near Gulzar Haus and another am not sure of. Decent man, has a 15+ year practice. Tell him you were referred by Iqbal Ali. You make a visit to the dentist sound unaffordable [er, maybe the ones in Banjara Hills]. This one shouldn't be. Good luck.

I appreciate it, my friend. My tooth is KILLING me today. It definitely had to come out. It got cracked in half a couple years ago due to an accident in which my drunken jaw ran into the fist of a Nigerian fella. How much do you think it'll cost to get a tooth pulled?

Are you in Hyd? There's some rumblings about a possible meetup this weekend. Check out the Hyd thread here.

Sadly, awayfromhome, I was a drunken mess. It was embarrassing. This was in Phnom Penh and Khmers just LOVE watching people scrap in the street. I got a couple licks in, but they weren't too effective. Thank god I knew the bouncers.

I'm sure it's killing you. I'd suggest you start on a course of Amoxycillin 500mg right away coupled with a strong pain killer. Getting a tooth pulled should normally cost somewhere on the better side of Rs500. Though you will have some flashy clinics chraging much more.

I'm not in Hyd this weekend. Have fun.
