I did my bachelors degree in business in India - only 3 years! I got in thru campus placement and i'm earning peanuts. But I'm taking it as an internship and my mom is paying my rent =P

In India, it is very important that you have completed your degree. There is a TON on competition here. Why haven't you completed your degree?

I once saw an advert for supermarket cashiers --- requiring a degree. The receptionist at the guest house I used to stay in (salary less than 2,000) had a degree. There is an amazing amount of education around in India: high competition, indeed!

Nick..... almost any white collar job in India needs a college degree. My dad had a driver who was a graduate.

Uoftsucks - if you have attended college but not got your final degree, Indian employers will not recognise it at all.

There may be some colleges that will allow you to continue with your studies but most good colleges are just overburdened with the enormous number of qualified students they get from the local area itself.

As I said earlier(and chen's info sort of validates that) - a bachelors degree in anything (other than engineering)will land you a job paying 15000/month max(if you are lucky).
To get a good marketing/business/finance job you need an MBA from a good B-school. A BBA just doesnot make the mark.

yeah, I will be finishing my degree in December. It is a B.Comm. My plan was to get a job, work for a year or two, then apply to ISB..

But my ideal situation would be someting that pays between 15,000 to 20,000 because I will be married..

A coleague of mine that was born and raised in Hyde, told me that a couple in India can live comfortable on about 30,000rps per month. Living comfortable depends on what your living standards are of course.

Well comfortably means going about doing things w/o having to worry about cash flow

Rent == > 5k ?
Home Expenses ( Groceries ) ==> 2k
Utilities (A/C, GAS, ETC) ==> 2k
Internet/Cable = 1.5K
so far its 10,500 rps per month...

What am I missing? Are my estimates correct?

how much do call center people make?
Chen can you put in a word for me? I applied for a couple of postings online, but they haven't gotten back to me

Rent will be more like 10000 for a 2 bedroom flat for a couple(one bedroom flats are not a popular option).

Groceries will be more than 2000 if you eat at home regularly and are non vegetarian.
You and wife will be having lunch at workplace? factor in that cost.

What about transportation cost? will depend on the length of your commute and whether you go by auto or bus or motorcycle or car.

This are all necesities. Any "fun activities" --- movies, eating out, shopping are extra.

If your lifestyle includes an AC then I would budget for atleast around 20000 for a "comfortable" life.

Costs

I am lucky the company i work for is paying most of my expenses, but my apartment cost 35000, it is pretty nice I probbably would have settled for one a little cheaper, but hey there paying. I looked at several, and if you can get by with 10000 you will be doing good. Not sure about utilities, as all my bills go to the company. Food can be rather high, depending on what you eat and where you eat it. If you like american food like me, you can find it here, but be prepared to pay more than you would if you bought it in USA. There are a couple of grocery stores that sell some imported foods. If you eat out, at a decent hotel or restaruant its going to cost you at least 400 to 500 a piece.
Gas here is really expensive, again im lucky have a car and driver and company pays the bill, but we spend on avg. about 1500 per week on fuel. You can ride the buses here fairly cheap, as long as you dont mind hanging out the back door every now and then. You can get by here on minimum amount of money, but if you are used to american life, your in for a big change. GOOD LUCK.

silverfox -- I leave Los Angeles on the 6th and arrive in Hyderabad on the 7th of June. I'm fairly adept at living abroad but I'd really appreciate it if I could pick your brain a little when I get there. Dinner on me.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the help.

I'm willing to take a dive in terms of how I live in Canada for the experience of living where my parents grew up and having them come live with me afterwards. Its all about keeping them happy.

As my other thread states, what is the best way to apply for jobs while in Canada. Can anyone put in a good word for me? What do they look for in a resume, etc, etc, etc.
