Orphanges - Volunteer Groups

When I thought I was going to be living in Bombay I got in touch with a group of lady's who go and visit an orphanage ounce a month (approximately 2 hrs away). Does anyone know of any groups like this in Hyderabad (maybe a little more active)that I could join for the next several years.

Thanks Peregrine

it's an "oldish" post but interesting topic. Even i was volunteering in an orphanage in Bangalore. It was like twice a week or as many times as you could possibly do it. It was a great experience I was teaching kids singing (the older group) and just playing with the younger kids. it was an eye oppener for me considering that in my country we maybe "get" only few children available for adoption per year. couples wait like for 10 years to get a child.

i am sure there are orphanages that would love your time but maybe it won't be so organised as to actually have a group. in Bangalore i found them online, called up and they were happy to have me there. No groups or anything.

There are several places in Hyderabad where you can volunteer. The ones I've visited are listed below (I've copied the description from somewhere). You can check them out for yourself.

* Divya Disha is a voluntary organization based in Uppal in Hyderabad and works for the holistic development of children and youth. The run Balniketan for Children & Child Line, a telephonic support system for kids who would like to discuss any problems they may have. It started in 1990/91 & got registered in 1988 and the main focus has been rehabilitation of youth & children on the streets, primary education in slums & construction sites, child domestic workers, campaigning for the rights of the child in government, private & community schools. The kids at the center are orphans, street kids or kids from poor families and live at the center and go to a nearby government school. http://divyadisha.org

* Auxilium Navajeevana is based in Musheerabad. It is a home to orphan and destitute girls who have no where to go. Most of them are picked up at railway stations, bus stations, and from the street. Navajeevana gives them food, clothing, education but above all a safe place to live in. The girls are from different age groups right from 2 years to 14 years of age.
