Smile moving to hyderabad

Hi all,
I'm currently living in Zurich, but my husband has a job opportunity in Hyderabad. Trying to find some info now before making a decision.
I am particularly interested in finding out about the quality of hospitals and health care and whether any has a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Anyone have any experience/feedback? Also are there any other active expat message boards? Any help would be much appreciated!

Regards

Re.Moving to Hyderabad

I have lived in Hyderabad for 8 months [in 2003]. It is a nice, safe and quiet city. People are friendly and helpful.

Autorickshaw drivers are honest. Buses are good and have their route boards in both Telugu and English. Cost of living is not too high.

As for hospitals, I do not know much as I only needed to visit a local clinic once when I had viral fever.

Housing is good and not too costly. For about Rs.12000 to Rs.15000 per month, you should get a decent semi-furnished apartment.

Visit the following site and post on their forums. You will get a lot of help.

fullhyd.com: Hyderabad and Secunderabad city guide and community

All the best.

Many corporate hospitals and some others will have NICU's, including perhaps all the ones nayan mentions. Quality of healthcare is generally good in Hyderabad, and cheaper than other larger cities.

There is an active expat section on this board right here

If you/your husband is working for a 'big'(Which I believe), you dont have to worry about health care at all..most of them have some tie ups with decent hospitals..

Traffic is really bad and food is probably the best on the continent..

If I were you, I'll take it!

I would agree with the above praise for the twin cities with a little wobble on auto men (some were great). Its a big city so get a good map..

And these days, there IS a good map. Go to Himalaya Book World in Panjagutta and get the Guide Map of Greater Hyderabad. It was published in 2005, so it's halfway current, and it's far and away the best printed map of Hyderabad. Be forwarned, though, that it sometimes shows roads that don't exist.

Google Maps also has shockingly good detail of Hyderabad, although the imagery is at least 3 years old. This matters in the IT areas; most of the buildings close to the Cyber Towers/CyberGate area were built after the images were shot.

Shameless plug: I've been in Hyderabad since April and blogging about it.

Dear Travelnow,

I am born, brought-up, educated and employed in Hyderabad, having completed 25 years of service in my Office.
-----
The Traffic is very 'huge' nowadays because of "mushrooming of 4 wheelers". Some of the auto-drivers are very courteous/good.
-----
Take a House very near to your Husband's office (or) very near to your children's school.
-----
In addition to super-speciality hospitals, spread over in different parts of the City, we have specialised hospitals exclusively for "kids".
=======
In any case, the "medi-care" has now become a little bit costly and perhaps, you may take a medical insurance.

so where to live?

Thanks for all your responses/links. So without knowing where
my husband will be working, could you comment on the difference between Jubilee Hills and/or Banjara Hills? Are there other areas we should consider?
What about Lancohills or is that a pipe dream?

Dear Travelnow,

Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills are two of the Posh Areas of the Hyderabad and where, a middle-class family cannot reside, due to exhorbitant rental values;
---
Even out of these two Banjara Hills is "more" costly because of its proximity to City Area, when compared to Jubilee Hills.
----
So, frankly speaking, it is extremely difficult to advise where to stay, unless the area where your husband's office currentlyb functions, is made to known.
=====
Just curious - are you a native of India (or) Zurich?

To the OP, an indication of budget would help, also (as vsp says) location of work.

Travel now.. the following informaiton will help in recommending where to live..

- Budget is already covered? So, if you let the forum know approx budget, you will get better details.
- Do you intend to have own transport (there are some superb places in hyd you can live in, but will have to drive for basic necessities)
- Close to school/work place is a very good option.. so which school.. DPS.. .live in Gachibowli
- What do you want around the place you live.. (full of life/shopping/access to night life/access to necessities/clam and peace, greens.. et el)

So go on and give us the details.. the Maha Guru's in this forum will be delighted to help

I live in Banjara Hills (Mithla Nagar). It's expensive (my company is paying for it - mostly). Frankly, I think I'd have been happier in Srinagar Colony. Not only are rents lower, but there's more "life" to be had within easy walking distance: more shops (for everyday stuff, not luxury items), restaurants, etc.

But, as others have said, proximity to work/school is a good thing, so tell us more!

i second zorts - this map book is a life-saver!

i've been living in hyderabad for about 9 months now and have gotta say that, depending on your priorities, living in one of the posher areas mentioned (banjara hills, etc...) isn't a necessity. (of course depending on schools, work, etc.) i live in a fairly ordinary middle class area in malakpet and don't have any regrets. (ok, well, i've gotta travel damn far to get a jar of pesto, but then the added bonus is that i've learnt to cook indian! )

i pay 5,000 rupees per month for a spacious 2-bedroom apartment in a new building... which, compared to the kind of price range you'll encounter in the fancier areas of town, is pretty damn good.

good luck, and let us know if there's anything else you're wondering about!

Thanks so much! I have to get some details and then will report back! My husband and I are both American citizens, but he is originally from India.
While I'm thinking, could anyone comment on the International Schools there? I am a primary school teacher. Just sent a query to the International School of Hyderabad regarding employment. Are there others that I should consider?
