Moving to Hyderabad in 2 weeks!

Hi, this is my first post on a forum...I've been reading this one quite a bit to find out info about India..Hyderabad in particular. We are moving to Hyderabad for a year (hubby going for work) - so me, my 2 daughters (6 years, and 3.5 years) and our little dog will be leaving in 2 weeks! Aside from the zillions of things to pack up and small details to attend to, we are excited about going. I've been to Hyderabad 4 times now since we've been married and I've been to India several times as I was growing up.

Would anyone have any info about what a good International school (aside from International School of Hyderabad, and Oakridge) in Hyderabad would be? Anyone heard of Eurokids? The International schools charge a fortune, but at the same time, don't have the same pressures of the regular schools there - correct me if I'm wrong. So since my kids will have enough to deal with, I don't mind letting them have a more 'relaxed' year that will be memorable for them.

I have lots more questions but will first wait for a reply. I've attended a meeting with TEA at their waldon club and got some info there, but at the time, we were not 100% sure of moving.

Also any advice on good areas where expats live would be great...we will likely be looking in the Banjara Hills area as that's where we usually stay with my in-laws...quite central to everything....however looking for a gated community there.

Thanks

Maesha, welcome.

You could scroll down start with browsing through some of the threads under 'similar threads' here/

Banjara Hills does not have too many gated communities.

As for living, depends where work and school is.

Regarding gated communities...check Stone Valley and Trendset...both are nice and central. Newer gated communicties are being built in Gachibowli...a lot of expats from my firm live out that way. Too far for me.

Why bother with school at all? My kids were homeschooled. My son is starting his junior year at Bowdoin (well, actually he's doing fall semester in Hungary...), my daughter is taking classes in the extension program at Harvard, so it seems to have worked out OK... Seriously, being in Hyderabad for a year offers so many opportunities; consider homeschooling them.

Why a gated community? I lived on a dead-end street in the Mithla Nagar area of Banjara Hills, and it was great. You might also consider Srinagar Colony; there are many nice, and affordable, apartment buildings there. If your in-laws live in Hyderabad, though, I'm sure they'll be able to help you find something.

I didn't live near any other expats; friends are where you find them. :-)

There are a dime a dozen "international" schools in hyderabad. Some of them offer the International Baccalaureate progam.

I am very happy in our gated community. My kids (except the youngest 2) can roam freely around the neighborhood. They of course can not go into any ones homes until I have met the parents and have to stay with in the community. I would not let them do the same if it were not gated.
