moving to Hyderabad and Kharagpur

Hi guys & gals

Some of you may already know my background so I will not repeat myself (unless you ask me to!).

I have been selected for a prestigious GOI Ramanujan Fellowship at a dept of science & technology lab in Hyderabad and also for a pRofessor position at IIT-Kharagpur.

My plan is to take up the Fellowship and stay with my parents in Hyderabad for 6- 12 months and then move to IIT-Kharagpur. That way I can keep the well known person from the lab who nominated me for the fellowship since networking is the key.

I am excited since I get to finally do research in what I want to do. Research money in India is increasing, I will get a bungalow on IIT campus (my avatar will be going with me), teach some of the brightest students in India (materials science & engineering), travel for conferences, write papers and supervise graduate students.

Should be fun and my parents are thrilled.

Cheers

Thanks all for the wishes.

I have a question though. How do I transport Nattu (108 lbs, almost 50 kgs) from Hyderabad to Kharagpur?

Ordinary first class train travel is almost phased out (I was thinking of getting a 2-berth "coupe" since it has a door) while AC-2 & AC-3 do not have doors -but rather open plans. Other choices are to drive (I will be buying a SUV in Hyderabad say Honda CRV or Tata Safari) - but, will need to find accomodation along the way that will allow me to have a dog overnight.

Cheers

all trains leading to kharagpur from hyderabad do not have first class whether air-con or not. the trains have 2A 3A and SL. every train will have a luggage compartment (there are two daily and one weekly train ) and you can leave your 50kg stuff there. check with parcel office in railway station to know about parcel and luggage services and charges

I would suggest take the dog in a first class coupe, even if there is no direct train.

suv... long drive, and places to stay can become a problem.

a train will be more comfortable for all.

but driving will be lot more fun.

just a word of caution while driving since you will be driving in india after long time, (may be first time)...

people are still not used to the new 6 lane highways. since the dividers are at far apart, those who start on the wrong side of the road often take one lane of the oncoming trafic till they reach a divider where they can go on their side of the road. so keep on the middle lane on sharp right turns or any blind spot.
the construction work is not complete at few places and the workers divert the traffic on one side of the road without any warning sign. so you may suddnly find oncoming traffic on your side of the road.

i am not talking about any perticular area of india, its almost every where. from madurai to amritsar....

Capt mahajan

From what I have been reading there are fewer and fewer trains that have (non-AC) first class.

The other option is to bite the bullet and take him in AC 1 and get a coupe. That will be royal treatment for my Prince.

Driving is also an option, although the journey could be long. I think if I can find guesthouses along the way at regular intervals that would accept a dog, then it would be a fun trip. I have a travel agent in Hyderabad and I shall ask her to investigate.

Cheers

This is on a fast road, yes? Is lunacy endemic in this country?

Natusbs... many congratulations on your success and happy news .

I don't think I've ever heard of people travelling with their dog on the trains; i didn't know it was permitted. My one-time neighbours used to travel from Chennai to Tirunelveli, and depended on a particular dog-space in the luggage compartment being available for their dog. If it was taken, the dog had to be sent by a subsequent train.

Is it a perk of 1st class that one can take one's dog? Is there a dog ticket?

Been browsing through the timetable since posting that.

The facility is indeed exclusive to 1st class.

I still fear that any dog will get fed up over a 3/5 day road trip (not sure about Kharagpur but Calcutta is 1500km from Hyderabad). And this guy looks like he will want exercise.

Nick, I have travelled with two dogs together in the train (1AC)
once in the wrong compartment too, for a part of the time. Switching compartments with two dogs and a wife was like the old story... if you had a lion and a goat and whatever and wanted to cross the river.....

I just checked the Indian railway website - there is no train that has either AC first class or Non-AC First class between Hyderabad (actually Secunderabad) and Kharagpur.

That does not bode well for me and Nattu.

Cheers
