I pay my maid 1200/- she comes twice a day and does the cleaning and washing and cuts the veggies etc for our meals and people say I pay her too much. So depends where you live in context of city as well as the area within the city. Also depends upon your own outlook of how much is her help worth to you.

-crossposted, livinhimalayas is paying more or less Hyderabad rates-

Please scroll down and see under similar threads. Pergerine's threads pertain to Hyderabad.

I think you may be paying at least three or four times as much as an Indian would pay. I know foreigners pay a premium for an English speaking maid, but it is still too much even if yours does.

We just gave ours a rise from 1,000 to 1200. She comes every morning, cleans the garden, washes clothes and washes up. We have just asked someone else to come and clean all the bits that our maid doesn't clean, like dusting. I've forgotten how many hours a week, but Rs500 I think.

Neither speak English. The first maid gets on well with the cats and looks after them in our absence. She also lives very nearby, and gets called for extra jobs, for which she does get paid extra.

If I paid Rs5000 I would expect a full-time English-speaking housekeeper!

That's Chennai

I give my maid 800 per month for cleaning, dusting & washing clothes. She also gets leftovers. Extra money if there are guests & a huge pile of dishes to wash. Oh, and she comes everyday. :-)

My maid cleans two times a day, does the vessels and cuts the vegetables and we pay her 1200/-

But after a year we got three of her kids admitted to a local school.

I pay my maid (at IIT-KGP) Rs 500 pm - she comes once a day in the morning, does the cleaning, of the house, dishes, clothes.

Nick - do you pay Ms N Rs 5000/pm ? - ouch that hurt

Cheers

Well, when I mentioned the full-time housekeeper, I nearly commented that it approaches our budget for my wife's monthly spending money!

But hey, she is the financial manager anyway... If she wasn't, there would be no money horribly quickly.

Men and money don't stay together do they? What would happen to the world if all the women were to stop managing finances!!!

If there are enough people available to work in an area the employers definitely benefit. We live in a place where finding someone to work in your house is very difficult, though they would work for half as much in an ashram. Seems like it is not a very respectable thing to do ... working as a maid or a house worker in someone's house.
