job/study in Hyderabad

I've been reading a fair bit on this board, so I thought I'd mention my situation and see if anybody could give some advice.

My girlfriend has moved to and is working in India. She is in Hyderabad (neither of us are Indian). She would like me to join her. She is making good money, so that is not the problem. The problem is what can I do there if I went.

I have taught esl in Asia for 5 years, and I'm in my early 30's. I understand that call centers sometimes hire foreigners, but I also understand that it can be difficult to get these jobs??? (and you must work evenings).
What other options might I have? How difficult is it to enter a university there to study.
Any ideas anyone has are welcome. Business ideas, or such.

Again, the money isn't that important since I'll be taken care of anyway. But I would like to find something of my own to do and gain experience in.
Is it possible?

Getting a job might be somewhat tedious, you'd need a work visa and you'd compete with locals for those jobs, so you really must have some significant edge over them. English is pretty well spoken here, so unless you are a native English speaker it might be difficult to get a job as an accent trainer. In case you're a native speaker of some european language there's still a chance, but you'll have to see if there's any call center working for such european markets in Hyderabad.

But you could also consider volunteering for a local NGO (teaching or whatever else you're interested in) since you say money isn't the issue. You can do that on a simple tourist visa.

You could also enroll for some course at a private institute if you can afford it, but you need a student visa for that (and you cannot get a job on that visa, btw).

Since you have mentioned that you have teaching experience you can try for a job in teaching.

Call center jobs suck. If you are in IT and can get into an IT company well and good. but going to companies in qualis and jeeps, crammed like sardins and coming back in teh same at 4.00am in the morning sucks big time.

That said, Hyd is a great place and city to stay in. so allabest.

You have to get the offer/place before applying for a work or study visa in your own country.

If money is really not an issue, you could seek some voluntary work?

How long are you planning to stay? Many of the people here manage to find something to do in India without working or studying!

Literally in my own country? I just presumed it had to be outside of India.
I am a non-resident of Canada, so...

The most likely scenerio would have me staying a few years. It seems working might be out of the question, although even though money is not a factor, it would be nice to make some additional income (greed knows no limits! ). I don't want to go a few years with a big hole on the ole' resume.

My gf has a business visa and we plan on marrying. Does this change things at all for me?

Anyways, thanks for the replies as always.

Then I probably should have said in the country where you are normally resident!

Once you are married to your gf then you may well be able to get a longer-term visa as her spouse.

But, as far as I know, an employment visa will never be given unless you have a job offer. You will need the documentation from the company.

oh sure u can work

Some things i wanted you to note:

1. If you are married, you can get a dependent or some visa which makes it easier to find employment.
2. Since you mentioned, that you will join as a trainer, it IS a day shift job and companies take care of their trainers well. Seperate cabs, cabins et al. If you wanted to join as a call center agent - the graveyard shift it will be.
3. There is a subsector called the BPO whic does more higher end work like finanical processing etc. being more proficient in the customs of the west and quite capable of writing good reports, you can definitely work there. Check out the Indian websites of Deloitte and Genpact. Am sure you will find something interesting

You can come meet your GF hut for a job, and get married.

That's a bit vague, whereas visa and immigration law is not at all vague.

One thing many of us never get to know is the immigration rules for our own countries --- it is one thing we never need to know. I didn't have a clue about British visa types until I married an Indian citizen.

If you have more precise knowledge or experience on this, then that really would be appreciated --- it is regularly asked about here.

Otherwise the best advice we can give people is to expect the letter of the law to be applied as per the visa types detailed in the websites of their local Indian Mission and on the Indian Immigration Bureau website
