Hyderabad: How does one find/rent an apartment?

I'm a single male going to Hyderabad for a few years and am not sure how to find a place to live. I have no company sponsor, and, based on what I've read and the ads I've seen, I believe I can get a decent place for around $300 monthly -- is this really true? What can I expect in the way of negotiations or contracts? Can anyone recommend any neighborhoods good for long-term living as an American in Hyderabad?

Thanks!

renting

Forty years ago, I rented a bungalow on the beach at Puri, it cost about $5. WEEKLY; I rented a house in Swayambonoth, in Katmandu valley, 3 story mud and timber, for $8. Monthly. If you are not looking for drywalled rooms, Ill bet $300. Monthly gets serious results. Good luck!

$300 monthly is not too high in Hyderabad - in fact you will find that rents in the supposedly upmarket localities are much higher.

A rough approximation for a two-room pad: the rents usually ranges from as low as $100-150 ( outskirts, less attractive places ) , to $150-$250( middle-of-the road residential localities in the city ) and upwards of $250 ( sky is the limit at posh localities ).

$300 is not off the mark at all. It will give you a decent two-room pad, but I guess if you want to move into an upmarket locality, you may have to shell out more.

I'd be happy being near a market, having broadband, and a western-style toilet (I don't know about the other ones!). I don't particularly care about the neighborhood as long as I can buy food without having to drive. So far this sounds great! Thanks for the reply.

Glad to be of help

It will be good if you find out where the exact location of your workplace is going to be - ideally you should find some place nearby to avoid commuting hassles. And thats why places around hitech city are becoming increasingly expensive - most of the IT offices are there and everyone wants to live nearby.

You dont want to get stuck at the opposite end of the city - commuting through the city during peak hours can be frustrating.

I'm going to be working from home, so I can really live anywhere. But one of the things that attracted me to hyderabad was its large size, diverse population, and affordable living.

Hey jon, I used to live in Hyderabad almost 8 years ago now, but I still have some apartments and houses that are being rented out to people. Like Big zero said, $300 is not really a huge amount in rent for hyderabad, but it WILL get you a very DECENT place. You can get a really nice apartment for about $250 around Sri Nagar Colony which is like an upper middle class area.

Sweet! How are things like electricity, water, and proximity to markets there?

Hi
you said you would be working from home and only need a decent market nearby .......... if you don't need to travel frequently you can choose to stay in not so posh localities and get a good 2bhk for within $300 ............. avoid areas where IT people stay and you will get a good bargain ...........also hyderabad now has good supermarkets ( Spencers, Trinetra, Food World, Food Bazaar, Subiksha etc.)in every nook and corner of the city ...........
