Hopeful to move to Hyd, need advice
I have just sold my company and want to spend a few years in Hyderabad. (Currently living in the US, native here). I grew to love the city during my travels there. It's a great central location in India and now a good gateway air hub as well. Could I live there on a tourist visa, or do I need to get a part time job teaching English or English accent training in order to set up residency? I would be willing to do so if nothing else to keep busy but also for the cultural interaction, I think it would be fascinating. If you think that is a possibility, are there any resources you can point me to, or anyone you know of looking for a cheap, enthusiastic hire in this field? Thanks!

To stay on a longer term basis you have to get a business or employment visa. |

Thanks, I realized the condition of the 180 days stipulation, but I was wondering about living in an apartment- can a tourist visa holder actually take up residency like that?

Many do and without a job. I am quite sure there is no law against it.

As long as you continue to leave the country and get a new visa every 6 months, and can find someone willing to rent you an apartment, I suppose you could do this. Your problems will be money, as you wont legally be allowed to do any work, and finding an apartment to rent. I dont know about the Hyderabad market, but I would say that in Chennai you would have a tough time finding one. I guess you could find someone who wants a flatmate for a while or stay in a cheap hostel

Why do you say "willing to rent you an apartment" ... is there some discrimination against foreigners renting? I won't have financial need of employment while in India, I just wanted something to keep my hands busy with and to engage in the local culture.

Some may be hesitant to rent out to single foreigners (search for some threads here, its been discussed) but if you take an apartment in a building or a flat where the landlord/landlady are not living next door, there is usually no problem. |
