Anshaa i would really recomend rainbow as I don't think any other hospital can match them in many ways. Dr. Pranathi Reddy is great. She will be your gyno as she is the most experienced and usually all foreigners are assigned to her.
I know another australian lady Anna and another british lady who both had a great experience and they encouraged me to deliver there. It was their first baby and for me it was a second. So for me it was ultra fast. They offer classes for hubbys and encourage them to be there with you. They offer epidural if you would be interested (i wasn't) it's that "walking epidural". My hubby knows many doctors and he wanted me to look at other options as well but i was so happy there - i kind of found my peace So whole heartedly recommending it to everyone. We should meet when you come! Don't hesitate to contact me if you have more questions or concerns. You are from Germany? There is a very nice lady from Germany here as well with two small boys...plenty of company, don't worry ![]() Will it be your first baby? |

We did it
Last year I posted my questions and that we were planning to come to Hyderabad with our little child. I delieverd a son in december and now we just arrived in Hyderabad, living in a hotel right now and searching for a place to live. Maybe any recommendations for an agency or a good place where to live with a child? We were thinking about a furnished serviced appartment. Also I´m searching for a doctor for our little son. And when we have settled down I am very interested also in meeting mothers here in Hyderabad and getting more informations, where to go, etc.
Thxx and king regards, Butet |

Hello everybody,
So interesting to read this thread! I am moving to Hyderabad soon and my husband and I are thinking of maybe trying for a 2nd child. Now what I didn't read here is if any of you took malaria tablets during their pregnancy or not? Just for living in Hyderabad I wasn't planning to take those, because of the location (province and city) and the duration (over a year). But now I read by some organizations on the internet that it is very advisable to do if you are (going to be) pregnant, as the disease will be more serious, you'll have more change of being bitten by the mosquitos when pregnant and there is riks to the unborn baby as well. It got me all a bit scared now, wondering if it isn't better to postpone our wish for at least a year.. Anyway, I just wonder what you have done and been advised by doctors? Some info from the locals can be of great help! ![]() |

This Thread was very useful for me. Thanks Guys!
Can the people who have delivered at Rainbow Hospital in Hyderabad please let me know which Dr you felt was better. I might be relocating to Hyderabad from the USA this month, in my 6th month of pregnancy and wanted to know so that I could start seeing the same lady. Thank You! |

Rainbow Hosp Drs
Dr Pranathi Reddy is head of Obstetrics and was my primary doctor - and definitely the one you should see. My secondary doctor was Dr Chinmayee Ratha and she ended up delivering me (as I went early and Dr Pranathi was out of town) and she was also great.
You'll be in good hands ![]() |

Hi Anna N and bbname,
Am glad to see this tread is still being read. I just wrote before bbname and didnt get a reply yet, so I'm asking you both again... Should you take malaria tablets if you want to become or are pregnant? The move to Hyderabad comes unexpected in a way, so I am not very prepared health wise. Still need to get new shot of DTP, TBC and Typhoid, can't get it here where we live so have to wait till we are in the big city in the next few days...annoying cause after these vaccinations you have to wait 3 months before trying to concieve. (Plus I need to re-do Hep B as I didn't build up enough antibodies. But, I read you can take these shots while you are pregnant.. )So bbname, I wonder, how do you feel about going there? You have all your vaccinations? What did the doctors say? And Anna N, how was it when you were pregnant? Maybe I'm getting all too paranoid,I don't know, so I would love to hear your experiences to get a better view of things. We'll be in Hyderabad around 1st of June by the way; looking forward to it! ![]() |

Hi Katkoeta
I didn't log on to IM for a long time and for some reason also stopped receiving notifications! I have been here in Hyderabad for nearly 4 years and never taken any anti-malarial medication (although I have stacks of it with me), nor have I known of any of my friends or colleagues getting it. The best advice I could give you regards this is talk to your OBGYN about it once you get here, to understand the special conditions surrounding infection during pregnancy. Drs in other countries do not know the local disease conditions and therefore endorse a broad suite of vaccines and meds that are simply not relevant to the place or the time/season. FYI, regards malaria (that I know of), there are 2 basic preventative medications for malaria. One is a (broad spectrum)antibiotic called doxycycline (generic name) which gives protection from this bug and many other non-bacterial bugs as a unique side-effect. Therefore it is also used as a preventative for tummy bugs (Delhi belly) when foreigners on short-term visits. THIS SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN BY PREGNANT WOMEN it causes discolouration of the babies teeth in-utero and some brands warn of possible birth defects. The second option Lariam is actually a hallucinogenic and often has unwelcome side effects including very vivid dreams (which could be good or could be bad), sleep disorders, and for some unfortunates - psychiatric symptoms. It's nasty stuff and better to stay away from if at all possible, even when not pregnant. THIS SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN BY PREGNANT WOMEN. Use as prophylaxis is only justified in very high risk situations - which Hyderabad is not. Use as treatment is justified however, as the risks to the foetus (malformation) outweigh the benefits to mother and baby. As for the other vaccines - sorry I can't remember what I took and what is recommended. However I do remember having my first vaccine for Japanese Encephalitis and realising once I got here how ridiculously unnecessary it was to have it!!! Cheers Anna |

Yes enjoying, but first year was hard settling in with no support from employers to set up a life here. However, after struggling through that we have enjoyed it here more and more as time passed.
My husband works full-time, as did I for the first 2 years before I had a baby. I didn't work for 18 months but now I have started again part-time (all voluntary on my part). I think working was an important part of me feeling happy/fulfilled here, especially as it is a long working week (6 days) for my husband, plus a few nights. If I didn't work I would have had far too much time to complain about things!!! |
