Hi,
Trying to get as much info before my husband and I move there. Can anyone comment on their experience of being pregnant in Hyderabad and/or provide info on hospitals and ob/gyns? Thanks in advance! |

Hi,
At first I must confess I am not an expert of the topic . But the fact that I have lived here for a while gives me slight courage to comment.Hyderabad is one of the premier cities in the south of India, that has a good medical tourism industry. Hence, the facilities are quite good and you would find the latest technology here. Most of the Major branded hospitals in India do have a branch here and hence one has access to good quality doctors. Apollo, Wockhardt, Yashoda hospital etc. Regarding clothes and stuff for the new born, that too should not be an issue with the huge number of malls all around the place.. There is a specialist baby shop 'Just Born' on Raj Bhavan Road in Somajiguda. You should get most of the stuff you want here.. I am sure there will be many more like this. Also, I happen to live near a Maternity home called 'Matrika Maternity Hospital', which I have heard is quite good and hygenic. But, I suggest you get more advise from someone who has experienced this first hand ![]() |

Rainbow Hospital, Banjarra Hills, Rd No 10.
Hi, I'm an Aussie living here the last 2 years. I delivered here 5 months ago (on April Fools Day!!!) and had the most excellent birth experience and pre-natal care at Rainbow Hospital, Banjarra Hills. It is a small private obstetric and paediatric hospital. I only started going there at 7 months pregnant, after trying many other places.
The Drs are great and have experience working in UK, Australia, US, etc. Private birthing rooms with all the mod cons. Even now they are setting up water birth facilities - first in India - can you believe it???!!!! Also they believe in the midwifry model of care and are using training consultants from UK to upskill nurses to be more like midwives. It is sooooo cheap compared to what you would pay at home - even though it's the most expensive hospital in town. In all, my birth and one day/night stay in the top room cost me under AUD800. Further, the Obs let me plan my birth how I wanted it - a first in so many ways for this hospital. It all went exactly as I had hoped/planned lucky for me. No drugs, no episiotomy (95% episiotomy rate in India - they do it as pre-emptive strike), no tearing, no stitches, privacy, intimacy with my baby and husband. Can highly recommend this hospital for pre and post natal care. I now use the Paeds section for my baby's medical care/immunizations, etc. I laboured at home, and only spent 1 hour in the birthing room before baby girl arrived. Freaked all the doctors out - never experienced quick, intervention-free primi birth like this before. You will be in good hands. |

Moving to Hyderabad with small children
I'd welcome some advice on moving to Hyderbad with small kids (6 months and 2 1/2 years) What's it like to live there? Health concerns? Shots required? What to do about Malaria? Child care and schools, etc.
I've lived in India for several years (not Hyderbad) but never with kids. Thanks for any advice, suggestions, etc. Also, is there much stuff to do there with children? Are there nice parks, swimming pools, etc? I know in Chennai and Dehli they have all of the old "clubs" left over from the British era, many of which have great facilities like tennis, swimming pools, etc. Does Hyderabad have anything like this? |

Hi there Emma,
I'm moving to Hyderabad myself in a couple of weeks, my kids is a bit older than yours, (2 and 1) and I spoke to my paediatrcn about shots and malaria and he suggested that we must just monitor the children and if they show any signs of a cold, we must take them for tests to see if it is malaria. And just to be preventive, like wearing long sleeves in the evening, nets over the beds and lotions to repell the mozzies. The problem with the shots is, your 6moth baby can not have all of the shots, they must be 2 and older, and the shots that he suggested was the following: cholera, typhoid, Hep A and he is not sure about the japenese encephalits (menningitis) Hope this help, keep well and good luck with the move. |

Hi everybody,
my husband got the offer moving to Hyderabad, first for one year maybe longer, it depends on us. 6 month ago I would be very happy about that offer. In Germany I am working as a freelancer, so I saw many possibilities for me also to go to India. I´ve never been to India before, my husband once. But both of us have experience living and working abroad, 2 years southamerica, 2 years Asia (Indonesia, Philippines),but without baby. Now we are getting a baby soon (december). We are planning to give birth to the child in Germany, free facilities, etc... And to spend the first two month in Germany (because my husband can get free time). Who has experience with a little baby (2 month) in Hyderabad? Where is a good choice to live? Is it easy to find a Nanny? Is it easy to find contact to other mothers? Networking among mothers? What is your experience? Thanks for your answers. Butet |

2 Months is a little dicey. I took mine at 11 months. You should understand the health conditions and come prepared accordingly. A good pediatrician is a must so I would make a contact on that. A Nanny is a complex subject in India although many people are available. Children make for links in India easily. I suggest looking for a good hospital relationship. I liked the Apollo hospital in Hyderabad although the one time we really needed one we went to a more local much less spiffy hospital that did quite well for my son. Remember, as a fine Indian doctor said to me, the germ theory is relative in India, its everywhere. You have to take a bit on faith. Still, boiled milk and water do a lot to help as does breast feeding..

Anna, I mentioned in rainbowhospital that i found them through your great feed back online...just mentioned "an aussie girl" and she immediatley said: "Must be Anna"
She remebered exactly who you are...isn't that great?Tomorrow is my second check up and will also get a tour of the facilities. I also have to check about the costs...to get an idea of how much the whole thing will cost us. |

Hi Lucullen
hope the Rainbow tour went well. I think you will find it has the best birthing rooms in the city as well as an OBGYN head of department with very western ideas about birth/labour etc. To give you an idea, it cost us about Rs27,000 all up for delivery plus one night accom in their top room (could have stayed longer but we didn't want/need to). That is extraordinarily cheap. If you have an assisted delivery it will cost more, how much more I am not sure. If you ever want to meet up or ask any questions send me a private email. Cheers Anna |

Butet...i think living in Hyderabad with small baby is totaly ok...mine is now 1,5 months old and i believe all your concerns and questions can be answered in positive manner
It's all fine. Decent doctors, can find moms to hang out with, getting a nanny takes some effort everywhere, dosn't it? same here.As far as vaccinations go...they get more of that here. I am sure Germany vaccinations must be very simillar to the ones in Slovenia...but here they vaccinate the kid at birth, then at 6 weeks...if you want to know in details what the vaccinations are just let me know. Have a great experience delivering your baby....or maybe you already did?!? ![]() Good luck! |

No, it is absolutely not true
I had mine with me both times. This time in rainbow hospital and 6 years back in a small nursing home in Bangalore. Absolutely nothing to worry about it...he will be able to be with you. |
