Want to move to Goa
Me and my partner want to live in Goa. We are just wondering what we can do to earn a crust once we are there.
We were thinking of buying goods and exporting them home to sell (tried and tested), or buying property to rent out, or even buying a property to start a backpackers. Does anyone have any ideas for ways to make a living or is anyone wanting a partner for an enterprise that they are thinking of or have already started in Goa??? Can anyone give us some advice as we want to get out of the UK PDQ!!! Nickie and Matt Last edited by machadinha : Dec 9th, 2006 at 19:40. Reason: moved to "moving to other cities" forum |

Start a cybercafe business in Goa. It has a great demand, especially with the tourists.

You are completely wrong on that one. Cybercafes in Goa are not very profitable, a close friend of mine who moved from California to Goa started a cybercafe and operated it for 2 years before shutting it down because he just could not survive on that income. |

Sanjay, this topic has been discussed almost to death for some time now, on several threads that get into the subject extensively, such as the one brought up above. If you feel you have something valuable to add then please go ahead. Otherwise, I don't see how stimulating the idea of "sure go ahead and start a business" (that in this case apparently isn't even very lucrative) is going to help anyone. It takes a little more than that. In fact I get the impression it takes a lot more than that.

@ Matthew
An aquaintance of mine (also from the UK) has been living in India (not Goa though) for many years. She invested money and lives from the interest or returns or whatever (I'm not sure what exactly she invested in). If you have a large enough sum and feel confident enough to tackle the investment market here, this could be an option. Otherwise I know only of a handful of Westerners who have tried and succeeded to make a living here. One that failed for example was deep frozen homemade pizzas and pasta sauces (not enough demand) by an Italian couple. One that prospers is a friend who has rented several flats, put them up really nicely, with AC, phone, TV, good furniture and furnishings, and rents them out (per room) to tourists, making a very good profit. But it's season-dependent, slow from April to September. I also know two people who both have started their own little export company, and in both cases it runs well, although they have to run a lot for their money. Have you guys ever been in India for an extended period of time? Or only for short visits? Living and settling here is quite a different story than coming for a holiday and taking a suitcase back home to sell in Camden market. |

To export you would need someone to sell the goods too. trying to find a buyer outside india will be nearly impossible while you are there as you wont be able to beat the guys already doing it, (I have tried it) I think you have to decide if its the lifestye or the making money thats important to you.

It certainly can be done. An IndiaMike member, who came here because his lady had a job here, started selling crafts on e-bay.
I think he only really did it to pass the time, but he was fussy about what he bought and sold, and careful to give fast and good service --- and built up quite a nice business.

FDI is not permissable for "retail trading" in India under FEMA, so this really cuts down the options (unless you're Wal-Mart of course). I've actually looked into this and it's one of the activities that is only available if you set up a partnership with an Indian national and then it's still complicated. Having said that, I reckon its one of the best opportunities. I was talking to a liquor store owner in Goa recently, small shop, average turnover in excess of 1 lac per day, average gross mark-up of 15%. Not bad.

The issue of outsiders coming to settle in Goa and buying property in the state has caused politicos to try and score brownie points.
A recent newspaper report: Law to ban land sale to non-Goans demanded BY HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, DEC 8 — The Curtorim Block Congress President Reginaldo Lourenco has demanded that the government introduce a legislation prohibiting sale of land in Goa to those not resident of the State as is being done in states like Kashmir, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh etc. In a letter to the GPCC President Ravi Naik, Lourenco warned that the people of Goa may turn against the Congress if the government fails to prohibit sale of land to outsiders.
