Shipping to Goa

Hello all,

We're in the process of relocating to Goa from the UK and are having a tough time finding shipping companies who ship direct to Goa. We've found one who will ship to Mumbai, but nothing further.

Does anybody have any links/share to share? We're looking to move in the next month or so, so this is urgent.

Thanks a lot for any help you can give.

Ask a freight forwarder close to you for door to door service.

Containerised, your stuff will be sent by rail/road to Goa from Mumbai. Even if the quantities are smaller than a container load, it should be possible to consolidate and send.

It may be cheaper to receive your stuff in Mumbai and get an Indian mover to send to Goa, but more hassle this way.

Thanks for the quick reply.

We have a quote for the UK to Mumbai, but we'll need to get the container cleared from Mumbai customs and ship to Goa. That seems like a headache! I don't even know where to start with getting involved with the customs people - are there agencies one can go through instead of doing it yourself?

Yes there are.

If you decide on Mumbai, the folks in UK should tell you who they deal with, and help clear it for you. If they can't, then you can use a 'Customs clearance agent' in Mumbai. (Google that term for more)

Just make sure you have the paperwork. If of Indian origin and returning, a transfer of residence is the way to go. And use a Bombay Custom House Agents' Association (BCHAA) member, they will be more reliable.

If you can get a door-to-door service, as recommended by the Capt, they should handle all dealings with customs. Of course, you have to pay the duty!

i don't know if you have tried many companies yet, but there are a number of international removal companies in UK that ought to be able to handle this. I used one called 360-degree relocations, although it was organised by a Chennai-based company (sorry, but I wouldn't recommend them since the manager who originaly dealt with us left).

Of course, I have the advantage of living at the city of arrival, but it is only a matter of distance: it still has to be shipped to your house from the port, however long that journey is.

Thank you!

I'm currently dealing with a company (came recommended by friends who have just moved to Cal) called www.excess-baggage.com

I've just googled Customs Clearance Agencies in Mumbai and am feeling dizzy with all the results! Will go through them.

We're of Indian origin and are on transfer of residence.

Fingers crossed.

Excess-Baggage shipped three boxes for me last year. It was very reasonable, but it was a door-to-port service, which meant several hours work for us clearing customs and collecting the stuff.

We could have paid an agent to do that for us.

Members have done their own clearance on stuff like this; from my experience I would have found it tough without a local-language-speaking wife (who found it tough because it is an utterly male world at the airport).

They should certainly do door-to-door, and if they will not, others will!

Yeah, they seem to do just a door-to-port service, which is a pain. We're going to be in Goa, so dealing with customs in Mumbai seems like a major hassle at this point. I've googled (thanks to the Capt's suggestion) and emailed a couple of Customs Clearance Agents. Let's see if they reply.

In the meantime, suggestions are always welcome. Need all the help we can get!

Try Crown (www.crownrelo.com).

We used them two times within India but I know they have offices around the world and do door-to-door. Our experiences in India were very good with them, just had to haggle about the price .

Has anybody tried P N Writer? They come recommended by a friend who moved to Goa years ago.

Writer relocations seems to be good, but their quote seems high : about £1800 for hardly anything. Is this reasonable? Customs duty and insurance not included.

360 relocations: found their site did me, although they were employed by people in India that I booked through. Their packing was mostly fine, although basic.

You'll find that as you move up-market to the more expensive movers/shippers that they use thicker and more sophisticated materials, which of course takes up more space. If you are moving antiques, then it's worth it.

I don't think that £1800 would pay for a whole container, so they must be giving you a part container. That is probably possible to Mumbai, but wasn't for me moving to Chennai; not popular enough.

Consider the basic costs of men, vehicle, packing and travelling time. The amount you are shifting is then marginal, and you could probably ship a lot more stuff for a little less money.

Discuss with them the basis on which they are charging, and how you can best utilise that. If you can bring more, might as well!

Six year ago when we moved from Delhi to Bangalore we paid Rs.42,000 for one large container including six week storage in Delhi and insurance.

Two years ago when we moved from Bangalore to Goa we paid Rs.58,000 for two large containers (we moved a whole office)without insurance because it turns out that when you read the small print almost nothing is covered.

Both with Crown. Not sure if this is a lot or not. At the time I just was happy it got done.

Coming to Goa was hassle for them, because once the reached Goa, everything had to be loaded on smaller trucks because the big one could not make the turns on the small roads. It became quite a scene where they had man standing on top on the trucks with sticks to lift the electricity wires so the trucks could pass.
It took them three days to deliver and unpack all the stuff from Mapusa (a small town where the large truck could reach) to where we live now barely 10km further.

I think this kind of service you only get from a reputable company and it is worth paying a little extra for this.
